Ermm...? They're getting a fully automated heavy metro system. I think thats about as close to state of the art as you can get... am I wrong? I'd kill to have a system like that in Seattle.

40 km/h? Not too fast, isn't it.

You mean, "is it?"

Its the test trains speed, in either case, it will reach different speeds at different sections.

Awesome project very modern stations; The part I don't like is that there is only a little part underground.. Underground building would be better

Why would you build underground if you can do it above ground? Plus is not that here they don't take care on the look of bridges overpasses or other concrete structures. No ugly bare concrete here.

I would think a city would only build underground if there was no room to build it above ground. Cities like Chicago have theirs above ground where there is room and if not it goes underground.

Those blue trains look beautiful.

Those are some really nice trains! And the colour is nice since the light blue gives a cool contrast to the city's desert environment.

Anyway, so Dubai now has the only metro network in the Middle East other than Cairo?

The correct would be: Dubai WILL have the second Metro network in the MENA (if Iran is excluded), but other cities and countries in the region are preparing for it too. Abu Dhabi should be the next to start work on.

The Red Line opens on 09/09/09 while the Green Line opens on March 2010. Two more lines (Purple and Blue) are already planned and word around is that plans for a 5th one, Yellow Line are to be announced soon.

BTW: The trains are made by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries but France's Alstom was also involved at some aspects of either design or manufacturing.

Interesting pic. Either the guy is tiny, or the trains are huge.

Bitxofo, on the Dubai Metro thread, someone asked "Classes? How will that work."

I responded with this:
There are three classes (Gold, Women and Childrens, Silver). Gold Class is the most expensive. It is the first car, has leather seats and more space. The Women and Childrens Class is for the use of females and children only. This car will have room for strollers and bags. The Silver Class will be for the "normal" people. There will be three cars for this class.

I should note that the women and children are allowed in any car, as long as they pay the correct fare. The only reason for the Women and Childrens Class is so females can remove their burqas (since only other females and youth will see them) and so that women do not get oggled.
I hope this answers your question.

It has nothing to do with burqas, you'd be lucky to see any at all on the public transport.

"Gold class" is also known as "first class", like HK East Rail Line.
