Ely Cathedral

this is ely cathedral, ely is in cambridgeshire in east anglia. the cathedral is 66m tall. it used to have three towers but now sadly it has two. its one of the most interesting cathedrals in england, not least because of the unique mix of romanesque and gothic caused by a collapse in the 14th century that saw part of the church rebuilt in a new style.
this is the skyscrapernews file on it - http://www.skyscrapernews.com/buildings.php?id=392

this is the western tower of ely cathedral, its romanesque.

ely cathedral with a fish eye, the only way to fit in both towers from this view

this panorama was taken about 30m away... you can see the perspective sweep round as its such a long building. note how the left part is gothic giving way to romanesque on the right

the octagonal tower is a lantern tower, so called because it lets in light and floods the interior of the cathedral

a close up of the lantern

the lantern and transcept. note the gothic cornices and arched windows on the lantern tower

you can see here how the gothic style windows that flood the church with light need flying butresses for support. note how the buttress is either side of the window but the curved romanesque ones dont need it.

a silohette of the cornices,a nice gothic form.

this clearly shows the romanesque styling. you can see how the cornices were added later and are clearly from a different era

the romanesque west tower from across the fens

this is the whole cathedral from across the fens

ely has plenty of quaint little streets as you can see here

another shot of the west tower with a fish eye

the west tower is pure romanesque

valia, i wish i did. i planned to go in it but the trains were so late i got to ely three hours after i meant to and by then it was shut! i aimed to get there at 2pm and arrived about 5 grrrrr.
a few facts about ely cathedral -
its the longest medieval church in the world. its 170 metres long. that makes it longer than even the cathedral in milan.
ely has the only gothic dome. ever.

i will be posting a thread on peterborough cathedral in a few days.
