Ancient City of Gour

Ancient City of Gour

Ancient city of Gour is the first circular-shaped city of Iran built by the order of Ardeshir Babakan, founder of the Sassanid Dynasty (226–650 AD). This ancient city is located near Firouz Abad in Fars province. Before the start of archeological excavations in this Sassanid city, remains of a monument called “Menareh”, meaning Minaret, by the locals and a praying house could be seen from afar. However, after the start of excavations under the leadership of Leili Niakan from Iran and Dr. Huff from Germany, not only these two historic monuments were decoded, also parts of the palace denoted to King Ardeshir together with the main gate leading to the praying house and a cemetery belonging to the Sassanid kings were discovered in this historic site. Among the most important achievements in this city is discovery of Sassanid paintings on the stones found in the ancient cemetery, depicting the Sassanid kings. At the present, this ancient site is under strict protection; however, continuation of archeological excavations in this site is still under ambiguity.

A designed floor belonging to the early Sassanid era was discovered for the first time in the city of Gour.

The colors used in this floor have been remained intact which indicate the special attention to use various colors in architecture during the Sassanid era.

One of the other important archeological achievements in city of Gour was the discovery of seat area gate which is very similar to the Persepolis facades.

The design of one of Sassanid princes was discovered in the city of Gour.

The murals of four Sassanid princes have been discovered for the first time on one of the walls of the palace.

These four princes were consisted of two women, and two young men. The method used in this fresco shows the effect of the Parthian painting on the art of the bigging of the Sassanid era.

The biggest problem with Iranian people is that they don't know just how great their country can be.

hey guys isn't it illegal to color historical monuments? According to what Arthur Evans did when he colored the palace of knossos I think the UN made a new law banning anyone to change anything even if it is to color, etc. This is why the ruins in the world aren't colored does Iran follow the UN charter?

No it is obvious that guy is coloring... and I just called my history teacher he told me its illegal to color any historical monument, he even said for some historical monuments like al-hambra palace they know what was colored and which colored but they don't color it because its a rule from UNESCO...
Just like the old egyptian palaces and the persia ruins in persepolis they can rebuild what is left but it is illegal...

unless few rule applies if it can be used in modern times like the samara mosque in iraq its was 1/3 destroyed and saddam renovated it.

Another is if it was destroyed by a catastrophe or in a war like the city of bam being rebuilt.
