$17 Million For Penthouse in Canada's Tallest Condo

Quote:
Aura Condos at College Park will be the tallest residential tower in Canada when it is completed. Designed by Graziani + Corazza Architects, the building will have a total of 985 units and all the glitz and glamor you would expect from a high, high rise. The top floor penthouse, 11,370 square feet of luxury, is priced at $17.5 million. Other penthouses in the building are priced at "only" $2.2 million for 2,200 to 5,000 square feet.
With the Marshalls flagship store, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond already open on the main floor, the future home of Canada's tallest residential building will have underground access to the College Park subway and 180,000 square feet of other retail space. For those die hard fans, you can watch the live construction progress over here: http://www.collegeparkcondos.com/webcam.html

The Aura Condos will be completed in 2014.

Work Progresses at Leibskind's Condo Tribute To the Letter L

Quote:
Construction on the L Tower, the 57 storey condo building, located above the Sony Centre, is progressing at a rapid pace. The building is a departure from the sharp edges in architect Daniel Liebskind's most recent work at the ROM and again in Las Vegas with the Crystals shopping centre. Thanks also to Rob Mac, a crane operator working on the tower and posting the construction photos to his Twitter account. Tweeting on a crane? That sounds safe. Condo completion is set for 2013.

Details:
Storeys: 58
Units: 600
Price: $349,500 - $3,200,000
Amenities: catering kitchen, library, private cinema, pool, spa.

Revealed: The Globe and Mail's New Headquarters

http://www.aasarchitecture.com/2013/...rchitects.html

Quote:
It looks like the Globe and Mail's new headquarters won't be part of the RioCan shopping complex planned for Spadina and Front Street, but rather they will move to King Street East. The Globe's architecture critic, Alex Bozikovic, broke the news via Twitter tweeting that "The new @globeandmail building will be The Globe and Mail Centre, a new tower at 351 King St. E. by @DiamondSchmitt. 2016 move."

The 17 storey office tower near St. Lawrence Market will occupy the 13th floor and up of the 500,000 square foot building. The newspaper been at its Front Street location since 1974 and was looking for a new home since selling last year. Condos and retail developments are planned for the area.

I used to dislike all the glassy condos with no character going up in the downtown core but in recent years there have really been some interesting architecture appearing with these type of buildings so I am happy now the way the skyline of Toronto is changing and looking to the future with great optimism.

Mirvish Gung-Ho On Demo To Build Gehry Condos

Quote:
Theatre impresario, David Mirvish, is heading to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) in attempts to save his proposed condo development in collaboration with architect Frank Gehry. The Mirvish+Gehry proposal on King Street will include a trio of towers, eighty storeys high, a public gallery to display Mirvish's art collection and new space for Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) students.

The proposed plans will also include demolition of the Princess of Wales Theatre and surrounding heritage warehouses which now occupy commercial space. Torontonians will fondly remember these heritage sites that once housed Honest Ed's restaurants including Ed's Warehouse with mandatory jacket and tie and served the finest prime rib dinner for $4.95.

With the City and Mirvish not able to come to an agreement on the scope of the project, the fate of the project will be in the hands of the OMB. If the board sides with the city the project could be scrapped.

It would be a shame if the OMB isn't able to see the bigger picture here. I love those warehouse buildings, but Toronto will be far better off with what's proposed in their place. Besides, I'm not sure why they couldn't just move the warehouses to another location. It's not as if we don't take down historic buildings all the time only to re-build them.

While historic buildings are taken down regularly in Toronto, they certainly aren't "rebuilt", their fabric is sent to the dump. What we get is some less-than-ideal and unconvincing recreation or their facades are just unsympathetically stuck onto the modern building.

I can only think of 3 recent historic buildings being relocated but they were houses and not the size of these warehouses. If this proposal goes ahead, these heritage buildings will end up trashed (which is much the same as Toronto's heritage protection regulations).

Umm, Parkside Village in "Mississauga" does not belong in this thread. Wrong city.

I posted it in another thread, but it's probably more suited here:
