It's looks very promising and might even rival One Bloor as my favourite Yorkville tower.

Hey all,

I am an undergrad living in Toronto. We have recently been studying building envelopes, and from what I have learned, glass wall construction is a very cheap but inefficient form of highrise construction.

I've just been curious as to why no one is asking how much it is going to cost the inhabitants of all these new condos for heating and cooling every year, and also how high the maintenance costs are going to be, 20, 30 years down the line.

For further reading you can check out this article by a building science prof from U of T.

He makes some interesting points.

http://www.cbc.ca/toronto/features/c..._conundrum.pdf

Let me know what you think.

Some people do criticize it as fool hardy and short sighted, but common sense doesn't always prevail. People let the huge big windows and vistas cloud their judgement. It's not a smart way for Toronto to be building, but I guess people will just have to learn the hard way.

I bet lots of these cheap glass walls will have to be replaced 10-30 years down the road at great expense with something more suitable. Of course the developers won't be liable for one cent.

As an aside, just as I predicted, the condo is bringing renewed interest in the retail strip along here--it has massive potential imo, as it's one of the rare parts of Bloor St W with mature trees (shading) and actually pretty great 100 year old architecture.

Agreed, that's a superb view. I imagine that more tall buildings would extend west from the CBD in the near future, but I don't think the St. Lawrence neighbourhood will be seeing skyscrapers anytime soon. I'd prefer denser European-style midrise neighbourhoods in place of the current low-rise sections.
