Is Toronto Getting a Bloomingdale's?

Rumour has it this will be 80-100 floors. If this has a big department store at grade + 100 floors of luxury condos this will surely be a super tall.

Developer Sam Mizrahi has bought several low-rise properties on the southwest corner of Toronto’s Bloor and Yonge Streets, including the venerable Stollerys men’s wear store for an estimated total of nearly $300-million. In their place, he plans to build a luxury condominium tower with space for high-profile international retailers on the main and lower levels.

Mr. Mizrahi said he will look for international retailers, such as the U.S. luxe chain Bloomingdale’s, for the space in his new development at 1 Bloor St. West, which he calls “The One.” He would also consider a high-end restaurant and supermarket emporium such as Italian-based Eataly, which draws big crowds in New York.

Downtown is becoming really dense and there's still so many projects in the offing. Toronto is on fire.

As I read your posts, I'll figure out what you guys most care about and contribute accordingly to make the forum even better. Feedback would of course be welcome

I've been meaning to start posting earlier but been really busy. Given the latest news by Tridel regarding One Old Mill in Toronto, I thought it would be a great first post

Pretty impressive...............now if you guys/girls want to attend the first viewing which starts TOMORROW, you have to go to Tridel's website here:

what are your thoughts on the project?

I'm looking forward to seeing Water Tower (the one above) move ahead. Great height for Etobicoke.

Very exciting things happening in Toronto. As long as investors mostly foreigners keep buying condos here it will continue. Read a report that over 70% of condos are not owner occupied, so this means there will be a lot more rental apartments available.

Condos have basically replaced rental buildings and there's no low rise housing being built in the city.

yes the only low rise is infill in established neighbourhoods. if Tory wins you won't see much new apartment coops being built either.

I'm a bit confused on these reports. In one report it says that more than 80% of condo units are sold to end users and only 17%+ are bought by investors. Anyway, the Toronto real estate market is a healthy one and the rumours of a bubble are far fetched.

70% are rented versus lived in by owners, this is true. I don't believe in a bubble, Toronto has become a global economic and cultural magnet, the new arrivals will absorb any glut as they seem to be. Besides, rental units are needed by young urban professionals.

Just to clarify, River City is just one development project in West Don Lands and does not necessarily represent the entire extent of WDL Phase I.

The River City project itself by Urban Capital is broken up into 4 phases:
  • phase 1 includes 2 buildings fronting King Street & River Street (being 15 and 7 storeys respectively)
  • phase 2 will be the 'cube-ist' tower (12s?) parallel/facing Don River
  • phase 3 will be the (30s?) point tower next to the Central Park
  • phase 4 will be the (12s?) tower centred on River Square
Site plan for River City
