I am sure it will join up (maybe by pedestrian bridge or moving walkway??) I will be willing to bet on it sort of like Macy's Dept store in San Francisco...main building and then Macy's men's department building across a small street..

Last Japanese department store in Hong Kong to close

TOKYO, April 23, 2006 (AFP) - The last Japanese department store in Hong Kong, owned by operator Mitsukoshi Ltd., is to close in September, a newspaper said Sunday.

After the planned closure, all Japanese department store operators will have pulled out of Hong Kong, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said.

Mitsukoshi Hong Kong, which opened in 1981, reported sales of 7.7 billion yen (15 million dollars) for the year to February 2006, accounting for some 40 percent of sales at the Japanese company's overseas outlets.

Mitsukoshi was planning to move its last Hong Kong store to another location in the city but decided that the price of real estate was too high, the business daily said.

Japanese department stores such as Mitsukoshi, Daimaru, Matsuzakaya, opened stores in Hong Kong and other countries in Japan's booming 1980s.

But as domestic business went into decline following the burst of the nation's bubble economy in the early 1990s, the companies began to rapidly contract their businesses overseas.

Sogo and Seibu, now controlled by their holding company, Millennium Retailing, have also withdrawn from Hong Kong, but have allowed local retailers to use the names.

Many thanks ja.

IMO if Japanese department stores come to Thailand, they may increase more competitive environment here. But, it's really hard because of economic situation now, or not?

But I find many Japanese department stores did not succeed here, such as Sogo, Daimaru, Jusco (some branches), except for Tokyu (MBK branch) and Isetan.

For Tokyu, it's another case from the others. Major success keys are high customer traffic and MBK's CRM strategy on tourist. พูดง่ายๆ คือ เสือนอนกิน ไม่ต้องดิ้นรนขวนขวายมาก

Most of the Japanese shopping at Isetan are the ones who are living/working here.

Mitsukoshi Dept and Sogo Dept in Causeway Bay (Hong Kong Island) are always empty or slow : ....

but Shinkong Mitsukoshi in Taipei near the main train station and the Sogo Dept store on Chung Hsaio Road is always hopping and crowded (they also have a giant "Its a Small World" Disneyland clock, which always attracts a crowd when it goes off) ....

anyway, hope the Central Chidlom expansion on ex-embassy grounds is cool...
maybe also some new introductions in that 10 floor podium like:

cool, modern presentation of the whole range of Thai OTOP products AND
Macy's, Nordstroms, Sak's, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman or Bloomingdales from USA
or Takashimaya from Japan
or Galeries Lafayette from France
or Harvey Nichols from England

and a canary-yellow diamond colored glass US Robotics-like tower with W Hotel on top please

and virtual-reality games arcade too...
