Lahore sports city

3000-acre sports complex will be built in the city

LAHORE: The Punjab government and Abdul Rehman Bukhatir’s construction company signed an agreement on Friday to construct a 3,000-acre sports complex of international standards in Lahore. The sports complex would be the first such project in South Asia to be undertaken with an investment of Rs 120 billion.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi also attended the ceremony held at the chief minister secretariat. According to the agreement the construction work on this project would start immediately and the installation of sports equipment would be completed in the next four years. Elahi said that such a huge investment by a leading international figure like Abdul Rehman Bukhatir in constructing a sports city in Punjab was a historic event and is reflective of the faith that foreign investors have in President General Pervez Musharraf and the Punjab government. He said that after the project was completed the Commonwealth Games and other international sports competitions would be held there. This would also result in increased tourism in Punjab and other areas of Pakistan. Elahi said that Pakistan had extraordinary sporting talent but this wasn’t tapped for lack of inadequate training facilities. He also said the sports project would boost economic activity in Punjab and generate thousands of jobs.

Bukhatir said 10,000 houses accommodating 200,000 people would also be built besides stadiums. He said the sports complex would boast international standard sports, training and educational facilities. “The complex will generate Rs 13 billion in tax revenue when it was completed in four years.

LAHORE, July 14: The Punjab government on Friday signed an agreement with a leading Abu Dhabi group of companies headed by Abdur Rehman Bukhatar for the establishment of a sports city spread over 3,000 acres of Ravi siphon land in Lahore.

Mr Bukhatar and a senior provincial government official in the presence of Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi at his secretariat inked the agreement.

Sources said that Mr Bukhatar would develop the sports city with an investment of around $6 billion. The Punjab government has given the land for it as 30 per cent equity of the project, and would share profits with the company.

Chief secretary Salman Siddique and some other senior officials had gone to Dubai last month to finalise details of the project with Mr Bukhatar.

Stadia and other related facilities for all major sports like football, hockey, cricket, tennis and golf would be constructed over one-third of the total land in the next four years. Around 10,000 world-class modern homes or flats would also be built for 200,000 people.

The first of its kind in Asia, the project would be completed at a cost of Rs120 billion. And the city would provide Rs12 to Rs13 billion to the government of Pakistan in taxes in the first four years.

The sports city would be three times bigger than the one in Dubai and in addition to a large labour force, 2,000 people having related specialties were being engaged to launch the project immediately.

The sports city would also have shopping malls where Pakistani goods, particularly relating to sports, would be offered for sale. Foreign experts of different sports would also be engaged in coaching and training. International matches of different sports would be held, making the city focus of attention of the world sports.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said such a huge investment in Punjab by worldrenowned personages like Mr Bukhatar was a historic event. Establishment of the sports city reflected foreign investors’ confi dence in President Musharraf and the provincial government.

He said after the establishment of the sports city international sports events, including the Commonwealth Games, could be organised here. Such events would also help promote tourism not only in Punjab but also all over the country.

The chief minister said Pakistan had extraordinary sports talent, which was wasted because of lack of training facilities. With the establishment of the sports city this talent could be utilised to the fullest and Pakistani sportsmen could be able to won recognition for the country at the world level.

He said the sports city would generate economic activity at a large scale, not only promoting sports in the country but also creating employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people.

Mr Bukhatar said separate arenas would be built for major sports like football, hockey, cricket and tennis. The place would become world attraction as far as sports facilities and training of players was concerned.
