Shanghai: World Financial Center, 492m (101 floors) (Part 7)

Shanghai World Financial Center (Part 7)
Link to Shanghai World Financial Center (Part 6), (Part 5) (Part 4) (Part 3) (Part 2) (Part 1)

Height: 492m
Floors: 101
Year (start): 1997
Year (end): 2008
GFA: 377,300 m²
Elevators: 31
Escalators: 33
Costs at completion: $850,000,000
Location: Pudong, Shanghai, China

Two architect firms is involved in the project, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd. The tower contains commercial offices, a shopping centre, a museum and a 6-star hotel. The foundation stone was laid on August 27, 1997, but a fund shortage on the Japanese side caused by Asian financial crisis halted the project, and nothing had since been done to the projected structure. Construction finally resumed on February 13th, 2003. The design of the opening near the top of the tower has changed in mid-October, 2005; from a circular to a rectangular opening. Architect and developer claim that it is cheaper and easier to implement the new design.

i assure you it will be the 492m height. you just dont change a buildings design or height during construction (unless its adding a spire etc) which SWFC doest have. A bldgs superstructure is engineered to take certain loads,so this tower will be its approved 492m height.no lower or higher.
keep dreaming.lol i think half a km high isnt too shabby!
btw, CURRENT HEIGHT= LEV53 OR 251M. (40M ahead of BurjD)

Now if they could fill in that "hole" in the top that would be even cooler.

Nah it'd look too much like the ICC in Hong Kong.

I like the way it looks currently

Well... the ideal design was the original one with the circular hole instead of the rectangular one but anyways, i don't want to bring this argument up again...

anyways, the SWFC is going up fast! when did they resume construction again after having construction stalled for several years?

The building construction resumed on November 16th, 2005!

Question!

Has someone renders of the initial SWFC design? As it should be only 460m tall an have 94 floors?

I like the circular opening at the top of the original design. They should've kept it the same. Now it kinda looks like a can opener.

That is not true, the building construction resumed in November 2004.

I don't have renderings of the 460m version, but i do have plenty of renderings of the version with a sircular hole on the top of the building.

The only big difference between the first 460 version and the version with the circular hole is the high! The 460m version has almost the same design.

Can anyone tell me why they swiched to the rectangular one? I think the circular one does match the building's sharp shape better.

duskdawn, I believe that with the sun shining through, that it was going to remind the Chinese too much of the Japanese flag. I guess with the atrocities commited in the past etc. I can't really see a bright sun as opposed to a red one, only sometimes partically visible and only @ certain points from the city sometimes only at certain times all depending on the weather, related.

So it was a sensitivity issue.

The new version is easier to build from an engineering standpoint. As well there were complaints that the original design bore too much resemblance to the Japanese rising sun.

Yeah, I forgot about the practical issue lol

You would think that with aaaaallll the fab new shapes being played around with in (skyscraper) architecture that it wouldn't be *such* a big deal now, but obviously to some developers it still is.

Spot the similarity. Yeah, they are both rouuuuund...
