HONG KONG | One Island East Centre | 308m | 1010ft | 69 fl | Com

2006-07-14

New Hong Kong Supertall Under Construction

A new 70 floor office skyscraper is underway in the former British colony of Hong Kong, the One Island Estate Center. Originally planned to be a mere 36 floors, the ambitious developer Swire Properties Ltd had the development substantially jacked up in height and redesigned by architect Wong & Ouyang.
It will contain 141,000 square metres of space and 59 office floors within the form that bares more than a slight resemblance to the also under construction International Commerce Centre in Kowloon.
Like that design, it has offset glass curtain walling and four primary facades that extrude at the top. The differences between the two buildings are found mostly in the lack of tapering in the One Island design and the curving corners that reduce the bulk.

The tower will stand over a new public plaza with a vast airy entrance giving the impression that it hovers above the ground adding to the 60 restaurants and cafes already in the area.
The supertall building which is reportedly 280 metres to roof and 308 metres tall to the tip of the fašade will be the 7th building in Hong Kong over both the 300 metres and 1,000 feet marks showing the Chinese territory has lost none of its appetite for building tall.
Completition on site by contractor Gammon Construction is scheduled for March 2008.

This one I love! I didn't think it would be under construction already, wasn't it only just announced?

Here are two images with relation to other skyscrapers/main skyline and height marking.

Hope they help ~

HOPEFULLY I WILL BE TRYING TO KEEP THE FORUM UPDATED ON THIS PROJECT, AS PART OF MY APARTMENT VIEW LOOKS OUT AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE. SURPRISINGLY ENOUGH (and it surprised me too), CONSTRUCTION IS ALREADY WELL UNDER WAY!

By the way, I think when this building is finished, it'll become of my favourite skyscrapers worldwide - there's just something so nice about the design!

I really hope it looks like the renders....

And here is Island East in relation to a very simple Hong Kong Island map:

I believe this is Hong Kong first 300m+ skyscraper EAST of Wan Chai.

Even Nina Tower in Tsuen Wan is west of Wan Chai.

Yea I think that's something a lot of people will agree on - doubt there will be many nay-sayers on this building.

The 2nd pic looks a lot like a very large glassy rounded Flatiron doesn't it?

it is a pretty fluent design, with the glass and a sleek facade, however i think it is maybe a bit too simple for my taste.

Hah. I think this will be barely visible from the TST promenade? mmm? It looks a bit far off from the main skyline. But as always, extremely well connected with the MTR.

This design is timeless. Sleek and simple.

Hmm we MIGHT just be able to see the tip of it although it's probably more likely to be hidden by the mountains.

I think you'll probably see it from Hung Hom.

I don┤t think that you┤ll be able to see it from TST but am pretty sure that you┤ll see it from Hung Hom. Isn┤t it interesting how most of Hong Kong┤s supertalls on the Island (bar BOC) are right next to cross harbour tunnels... Central Plaza (Cross Harbour),2IFC & The Centre (Western Harbour Crossing) and now One Island East (Eastern Harbour Crossing).Must be due to the close proximity of major transport nodes.

IMHO the design for this building suits the area. Furthermore, who cares if the building is not within the main skyline... It gives people living in Tsueng Kwan O and Kowloon East something to look at across the harbour instead of the bland residentials that currently plague Island East! =P
