In fact, the image posted by skybean looks a lot like São Paulo, buildings as far as eye can see!
Don't be that offensive, please. Sao Paulo hasn't any building over 200m

Why you think so? Apparently, today China's economic center is SH, not HK...

Oh, I don't know. SH is too large... 6340.5 km2
2648.6 km2 for urban area... Besides some old building are quite nice, I don't feel like all of skyscrapers...

In terms of highrise count, I would guess that Shanghai is already ahead of Hong Kong by a fair margin (although not as tall yet). It may even been the most skyscrapered city in the world. It is very logical. With around 16 million population (and growing) versus HK's 7 million, the need for the highrise will always be there.

While not constrained for land in the same way as HK, China as a whole is very pro-highrise in major metropolitan cities. As the Mainland's premier city, Shanghai will only continue to attract foreign investment and workers from abroad and from within the Mainland who wish to tap into the many opportunities that continue to become available.

Looking at this photo:

Most of the buildings are built in the last 10 years? Wow! It's unbelievable but true, we've seen it in front of our eyes. In this case then Shanghai is surpassing New York or HongKong, I can see that. It's no brainer to see that, it's possible.

Sorry, but you're wrong, mate.
Shanghai has probably already surpassed Hong Kong in numbers of highrises - and will do so in heigh in a matter of years.
New York is already far away in the backwaters.
