I suppose if landmark buildings such as the St Pauls tower were designed to be radical, there is always the risk of it dating more quickly than a tried-and-tested kind of building. Of course the opposite could be the outcome, but I think they've tried to play it safe on this project, without being too dull about it.
I'm sure the promotional material for the tower says that it was designed to be 'timeless'. Providing there is the possibility of recladding the buildings in the future if required, I don't see why they shouldn't stay for the long term.

I suppose I'm not questioning weather they will be there for the long term I imagin they will have a lifespan of about 30 years much like the egg box did and so many other sixties buildings. they will be there until the next economic boom in the business cycle and another buliding spree starts. But while they are knock down and replaced again the one building that will remain and never look tatty will be the town hall so thats a plus!
I really hope city lofts and st pauls looks good but the only feature I think is great or deserves its location is the carpark I really do think it is great. The really issue I have with city lofts is that it is cladded surely that should scream No! to everyone apart from the information commons I don't know of another good quality (quality being the key word) cladded building. Cladding is only used to cover up cheap materials and low quality labour forces isn't it?

True - the oldest skyscrapers in New York are approaching 100 years old now, and the ones that remain still look great.

They need to build taller building's to last really, cause of the cost of demolition. With smaller building's, they can be quite easily and cheaply demolished and replaced, but with building's 100m tall, it's a lot harder. (You saw how tedious it was demolishing sheaf house, and that wasn't particularly tall).
I'm afraid I don't fully agree with you Tom. St. Pauls 1, although it's not a radical design, I think it's quite interesting, and the cladding (sandstone) is the same as on the Town Hall. With the hotel, it looks quite modern, and not overwhelming. Possibly it was a wasted chance, but what would you put there instead? The cladding (on the town hall side) is again sandstone, but i've heard reports that the quality of the actual building isn't good. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. |

Just about every skyscraper is cladded otherwise you would just see steel.

Not sure if this is common knowledge, but the BIG HOLE is to accomodate the underground casino.
Sounds cool!

I didnt think the casino was underground. I thought it was at street level onto arundel gate. But I could well be wrong.

Maybe there is a floor below ground as well as street level then?

yes it will be on both levels, it is partly due to the incline of the land:
as you can see here there is a level below millenium square: ![]()

Ah, that does make sense. We finally get why they appeared to be digging a 8m+ hole for a 30m carpark!

Just had another wander past over dinner. Tower site is definately devoid of any activity.
There is however still an awful lot of activity on the other half of the site. Looks like the car park/offices are well and truly under way. |

I think office 2 is underway, don't think 3 is. The car par (casino) clearly is.

It's just the carpark under construction isn't it or is it the 2nd office block also?

That hole does look like it's under both the car park and 2nd office block. It's just not close enough to the road to be the car park surely?

the area in the hole marked out by the long pieces of wood looks to be the shape of the square which will rise above it. it matches the site plan diagram posted recently in the city lofts thread. the site is still quite hard to figure out but knowing the size of the square does help.

yes. i can say with some certanty that the section in the middle is the square. and i can also clarify that the car park is under construction as i have seen them drilling the piles down along the road side of the site, and pumping them with concrete. bt the 2nd office building is definatley not under construction yet though.
