"Novo Mundo XXI" project still alive!

SANTO DOMINGO.- The project to construct an artificial island in the Caribbean sea on Santo Domingo’s water front, continues on the Executive authority’s table after the Government had announced it wouldn’t support the plan.

This week, the Executive authority’s legal consultant sent a memorandum to the Senate informing of modifications to the project’s contract the artificial island promoters have made in order for Congress to retake discussions on the subject.

Cesar Pina Toribio, presidential legal consultant, attached the letter from Santo Domingo Re-Development Company’s representative, Emilio Gonzales Calderon, showing the contract changes proposal to the memorandum he sent to Congress president, Andres Bautista last Tuesday.

The changes to the contract had been sent to President Fernandez the day before by Re-Development.

The changes involve article 14 in the contract which talks about the "economic balance" the State must guarantee the company constructing the Island.

Last January, the Government, through Rafael Núñez, announced the project Nuevo World XXI, popularly known as the Artificial Island would not receive it’s support considering that the industrialists that impelled it had not shown "harmony nor a determined interest".

During the public reviews conducted by the Senate, 26 out of 28 summoned institutions expressed their rejection for the project.

Also, the neighbors from the Capital City's South region objected the Artificial Island.

Pondering the panorama, Senator Jose Tomás Perez requested the Executive authority to retired the project from the agenda, something which obviously never took place.
