This could be complete bollocks, but ages ago I heard the concrete industry in new york had been monopolised years and years and years ago (allegedly by the "mafia"), that meant that the price of building a concrete scraper was stupidly expensive compared to steel. Don't quote me on that, but that's what i heard..... (?!???!!?!)

The other reasons why Commercial buildings are build with steel is you can have bigger spans of space which large offices need. With concrete you have to have smaller spans. Structural integrity is independent of the lightweight floors, so holes can be cut for staircases, ducts and wiring. Those features are crucial for investment banks and other tenant companies that need flexible office space to respond to rapid changes in technology and market conditions.

Another factor : all-steel buildings are much lighter than concrete+steel buildings. I have heard Shanghai is sinking a couple of inches a year due to all the new heavy highrises.

this pic is taken from one of the Shanghai threads, but this building in the foreground is the shape of what BOA will be, right? Idk how tall it is, but BOA will be 945ft to the roof.

Great pics. It getting up now.

I'm not convinced about the cladding though. But have to see more to make a real judgement.
