This spire never showed up well in renderings. Now seeing it, it looks like a transmitter you'd see on Long Island. I agree, it would look better somewhat more *solid*.

Oh wait,t hat's how the spire stand?
I thought that it was a round spire and all the bars around it were holding it up while construction is going on.
Whoops.

That's just towards the base of the spire. There will only be a straight spire towards the top.

I am wondering if the final spire will be higher than the ones on Conde and NYT Tower?

I just hope that nobody got hurt or even died when that occurred.

I really like the spire. You can see in the renderings that the bracing will taper away and the mast-like spire in the middle will continue the whole way up.

Would you rather the entire spire be like that on the NYT Tower?

The spire still has about 40 to 60 meters to go or so. The 'oilrig' you talk about actually dispels as it goes up and the spire in the middle reaches the very top of the height without the supports that surround the spire at the momment.

Crane accident stops work in Times Square
19 October, 2007

By Eleanor Goodman

Eight injured, citation ordered after debris falls 53 storeys onto street

Work has been suspended on a site next to New York's Times Square after a crane load smashed into the side of a signature skyscraper under construction.
The crane dropped a crate from the top of the 53-storey Bank of America tower, which is under construction one city block from Times Square in Manhattan.
The crate hit the 45th floor and several others on the way down before it fell on to a subway entrance that was closed as part of the project.
Four of the injured were workers, three of which were in the subway stairwell, and four were pedestrians.
A spokeman for construction manager Tishman Construction Group said they did not yet know what had caused the accident and did not know if the load was attached to the crane at the time.
The New York City Building Department has ordered a citation and served a stop-work order to review Tishmam's operations.
