I doubt it's smog. Remember NYC straddles the atlantic coast, and on still days when there's warmth you'll get that haze. However, some days the air there does seem a bit filled with non-good stuff, even here in my semi-rural town it can get that way. I think it's more of a stagnant dry air thing than a 100% pollution thing. I've been going here on a weekly basis for a really long time, and the only time it'll get nasty is days with no wind at all.

I thought out of all the world big cities nyc was some what clean. At less air wish, I never had the problem of seeing because I had a smog clude in my face. And I've been to cities that weren't half the size of NYC that had smog for days and I do mean days.

It may produce less air pollution per capita than Los Angeles or other metro areas in the US, but it's also a whole lot more crowded than any other city in the US. You pack that many people and that much traffic on the island of Manhattan, and you're bound to produce a smog cloud now and then.

That's always been the problem with cities - they're good for economies, but they're a public health nightmare. Running water, closed sewers, and modern medicine have made life easier, but that only encourages more people to move to the cities.

As a NYC resident, I can tell you that April has been unusually smoggy. New York air quality feels like it has been making steady improvement in the past decade (80s and 90s were pretty bad), but this month you could smell ozone and the skies were visibly much smoggier than usual. It probably has something to do with the lack of rain and wind (nothing to wash the air)... or maybe the surrounding power plants and refineries have upped their output.

I never felt crowded when I was in New York at anytime. I felt crowded in Manhattan during rush hour but that was about it. Plus when I go to NY I only travel at night, not to many cars moving in and out of the city then. And I don't think there's enough people living in New york. We can fit another 3 million people and Brooklyn and another 2 million in Queens lol.

It didn't take long for Douglas Durst to find a tenant to replace Eli Tahari, which backed out of a deal for the 50th floor of his nearly finished One Bryant Park.

It's gone to Bank of America, Durst's partner in the tower, which now claims 36 of its 51 floors.

Tahari was paying $125 a square foot.

And BofA? "More," Durst said.
