Hydra, Greece

Hydra is one of the Greek Saronic Gulf Islands, located just 65 kilometres south of the mainland port of Piraeus, Athens and just 20 kilometres off the Peloponnesian coast.

Hydra, is a cosmopolitan and fashionable island that began to attract a band of artists in the 1960's who had been mesmerized by its spectacular, steep-sided port. Even today, artists and various stars are visiting the island and Hydra has gained the title of the artist's colony.

There are many reasons that make Hydra a popular holiday destination. The traditional architecture and the untouched nature of the island (strict laws helped Hydra escape the building mania of the 20th century), the absense of cars and bikes, leaving Hydra in the peace of the past, the nice cafes on the port, beautiful beaches, traditional architecture, and the picturesque settlement of the Town attract various visitors.

Once with a population of 25,000, Hydra made a remarkable contribution to the war of Independence in the 19th century. Some Hydriots spent their own fortunes to convert their fleet for war against the Turkish fleet.

Since there are no cars in the island, the only way to go around is either the water taxis (to Vlichos, Kamini, Miramare) or by foot. You can also hire speed boats for the destination you want.

Nice pics. Hydra is cosmopolitan and classy, combining traditional Greek with high-style. Not surprising so many world-famous celebrities have summer homes there.

The population used to be 25,000. It is much less now.

Small scooters are allowed on certain parts such as the port for delivery services, etc.

It's good to see that there is some green on the island. I'm not a fan of islands in places like the Cyclades, where there are no trees, and the islands basically amount to being large rocks.

I know some forumers might get mad at me for saying that, but its my personal preferance.

Zorba,

Why would anybody get mad? Some people prefer the dry, rugged, mountainous islands of the Cyclades while others like the lush green, more "tropical" islands of the Ionian Sea. Personally, I like both. What I need is nice beaches. Even if the island looks nice, if it doesn't have nice, swimmable beaches, I tend to avoid them.

I thought my post could have possibly offended some forumers who might have roots in the Cyclades.
I guess you could say I'm biased towards the Ionian islands though, because my family is from Zakynthos.
