For instance in Hong Kong, right downstairs in most areas you can do all your basic shopping and eating right there. It looks like these are your standard North American style condo buildings with nothing around it.... doesn't seem like that great planning (North American city planning is all about the car... and it sucks) or perhaps these pictures obscure the commerical areas.
I thought of the same thing too. But I am pretty certain there will be commercial spaces in these plans, how can any city be without them?!

I am curious to know about China's retail culture. Do people now drive to big Walmart type stores to buy consumer goods in bulk, or there are neighborhood stores that still exist in the cities?

I think no city can live without the neighborhood stores...in addition to the walmarts, carrefours,Géant, etc. That's what i pretty much see across europe.

The latter.
When I first came to America I felt inconvenient due to the lack of a car until I bought one. That's as easy/cheap as buying a bicycle in Beijing. But I also don't think people in big cities will buy the car even they can afford. They also need to consider the traffic.

Well, you never know. People are different from each other, and you never know what's going to to happen in future. At least, I will never have any interest in living in Melbourne or even anywhere in Australia, even though lots of Australians assume that's the best place to live in the whole world.

No offense to anyone, these proposals are great and all... But honestly, it's bad urban planning. It's like something from Frank Lloyd Wright or Le Corbusier...

But I guess if people want to live there, then that's their right.

Tjanjin will grow faster than Harbin, because Tjanjin will be built as the econemic center of Northern China.
