Sorry guys, better luck stealing another team. Typical business posturing is happening with the Pens deal. The deal offered by PA is excellent and the league (and team) would be foolish to give up the U.S.'s best hockey TV market with history and a solid fan base to go elsewhere.

I agree that I think it would be somewhat silly for Pitt to lose their team, but it seems like the state/Pitt has been screwing over Mario and his crew for years, at least that's what I've gathered. If the Pens are so loved in Pitt (which I know they are), how come they haven't gotten an arena deal in the works until now? It's funny all the differeing opinions though. A guy who visits the KC site alot, lives in Pitt and he's been saying that all the Pittsburghers are already giving up on the talks with the Pens. They've been saying the Pens will be moving to KC. So I guess we'll wait and see what transpires.

The owner of the Pens in the 90s had work on done the current arena. During that time, the state built new arenas, ballparks, and stadiums for every other team. Had the request at the time been for a new arena it would have been done then. when Mario's group took over, he was demanding it out of nowhere, then the recession hit which made the demand seem untimely. For the most part, the people who are working the arena deal now, weren't in office when Mario took over.

To be quite honest, this whole experience the last few months has just been theater to me. I never believed that the team would move (for many reasons) and certainly it didn't make sense for a very strong hockey market to lose its team... and so I, like many, have sitting back and watching the contrived drama unfold.

The situation was made to look worse with the god awful Pens plan to attach on to the casino bid. It wasn't the casino committee task to choose based on some supposedly free arena from the Isle of Capri (which wasn't really "free"). The committee's job was to choose the best bid for a casino.

The Pens played out the drama to get their guy in.

In the end they will get their arena and all of its revenue etc anyway.

The NHL's proposed realignment will likely mean a small expansion and that could be KC's ticket. It would certainly be a better risk than the sunbelt, but to move a team from a healthy market when the NHL is struggling for national relevancy would be a step backwards.

Here's a nice little take on what's going on in DT KC. The author f***ed up some numbers though. The P&L cost $850 million, not $350 million. And the Sprint Center cost about $280 million, not $250 million.

Another Penguins article.

Lemieux was asked about his impressions of Kansas City as a hockey market.

"I've only been there once," Lemieux said. "The one visit we had was very, very positive with local leaders being there and the corporate support they showed from the start and having the (luxury) boxes all sold out. That's a pretty good start."

Consultant urges Kansas City to plan a 1,000 room hotel for downtown KCMO.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/16547966.htm

Kansas City should begin planning a 1,000-room hotel near Bartle Hall that would open in four years, according to a long-awaited study on the downtown hotel industry.

The report, however, also advised the city to be cautious about a smaller hotel project being pursued by the Cordish Co. of Baltimore. Cordish wants to include a 200-room luxury hotel in a condominium tower it is planning as part of the Power & Light District project.

The study and city officials have identified it as a W Hotel, one of the nation’s premier chains.

A funding structure for a new 200-room hotel downtown that places the city at any financial risk or jeopardizes tax increment capacity for other major projects is not supportable at this time,” the study said.

Another article talking about capping I-670 through downtown.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/16562673.htm

Several suggestions have been made about how a deck could be used: running a roadway on top, putting a park there and allowing buildings to be erected along the sides. This kind of project — what some dub The Lid — could cost upward of $200 million, based on preliminary estimates.

A city document outlining the study sets the target area as a six-block stretch from Wyandotte to Oak streets. A deck would provide a 300-foot-wide strip, including the current Truman Road frontage roads beside the highway.

I like that design, our new one is kidna old fashioned, but it looks like KS is taking a risk indesign, and boy is it paying off for KS! I love the desigh, its very elegant, while keeping its modern sleek feel,
very nice.

I urge anybody interested in Kansas City current events... development, to check out this site. It's a new host from the old kcskyscrapers.com, they went in a different direction and didn't find need for a forum anymore.

Beautiful. Just beautiful

Kansas ******* City. The role model for what every Midwest city should strive to emulate, including Chicago. Because unlike Chicago, KC never had a mass period of decline. It was all uphill, baby!

I've browsed that website a few times. I don't post there anymore because there's this one prick who ruins the WHOLE site. Man, I wish his ass would get a life. Who is that desperate that they need to constantly keep registering on the same Internet forum only to get banned after six posts?
