Looks like in 2008 or 2009, Kansas City will have 4 professional sports teams, the Royals (MLB), the Chiefs (NFL), the Wizards (MLS), and the Predators (NHL).

Also, check out the West Edge website. There is now a 3D animation which shows the detail of the project. This development is under construction on the west side of the Plaza and was designed by Moshe Safdie.

This has been a rumor for a while, but developers are proposing a 21 (actually 18) floor hotel for the Freighthouse District of Downtown KC. It would be across the railroad tracks from Crown Center and Union Station.

Any more news on a major sports team taking up residency in the new Sprint Center or are they going solo for now?

As of right now the only Tenant is the Kansas City Brigade (Arena Football League). There were rumors that KC might have been getting the Nashville Predators but now a Nashville group has stepped up and will more than likely get the team. As far as teh NBA goes the only available team is the Sacremento Kings, the Kings would be very welcomed here in KC as they started out here.

So to answer your question we still have no tenant as of right now. I doubt it will stay that way for more than a year though.

The NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) Hall of Fame and Museum is coming along nicely. I like the lit up pics of college players/coaches on the north side here. There's also a large picture of Kevin Durant on the west side of the building. This building is attached to the north side of the Sprint Center.

Even though I generally dislike sports, I find the arena quite appealing.
Any updates on the P&L District?

Midland’s loss of fixed seats would have an effect across town

After lying dormant well over a year, the construction game is finally afoot at the historic Midland Theatre.

Still some entertainment movers and shakers are concerned about the Midland’s fixed theater seats getting yanked out and worry how it will hold up when the volume gets turned up.

“They’re going to have to replaster and repaint the entire interior of the building if they want to do rock shows, and it took the Uptown two years to do that,” says promoter Jeff Fortier. “Otherwise the ceiling plaster will fall on people’s heads the way it did at the Lauryn Hill show. When plaster fell off the ceiling onto the customers six years ago, standards were put into place to not allow rock shows or certain high-decibel events.”

Something similar happened in St. Louis’ Fox Theatre, Fortier says. “They had to hire engineers to review decibel levels and ban most rock shows as it was causing the fine touches of that venue to come apart.”

Promoters say the Midland may no longer be able to host Broadway, symphony, ballet or urban theater and comedy sans its fixed seats. Anybody notice that the Symphony’s pops series migrated to a suburban church near 135th and Roe?

“I’m trying to get the Midland,” says Theater League head Mark Edelman. “I’ve got 10 to 16 performances a year that I have no place to play right now.”

Why not just use high quality padded, folding chairs?

“When you’re selling a ticket for $50 or $60 or more, you can’t ask someone to sit on a folding chair,” Edelman says. “Legitimate theater requires a plush theater seat. It’s part of the experience.”

Ditto for mature audience magnets like James Taylor, George Carlin, Kathy Griffin, Paul Simon and Norah Jones who also prefer fixed seating, Fortier says.

“Padded chairs are seen as tacky and inappropriate” by some artists, Fortier says.

The bottom line: What is anticipated as becoming an AEG-run Nokia Theatre KC Live will likely compete for largely the same talent pool that plays venues like the Uptown, Beaumont Club, VooDoo Lounge, Crossroads KC — even Starlight Theatre. And downtown will be left with but a single venue of substantial size for what the theater biz calls “legit,” urban entertainment and other seated shows.

“Now that the city will only have one legit theater, the city overall is going to suffer,” says promoter Steve Litman, who books talent at St. Louis’ “fabulous” Fox. “Truth be known, what Kansas City needs is a performing arts center that’s going to be state-of-the-art and 2,700 seats or larger.”

Smaller venues like the proposed 1,800-seat PAC may suffice but can also lead to elevated ticket prices, Litman says.

“If you build a theater big enough, then the ticket prices can come down,” he says. “It’s just simple division.”

Worse yet, if the Midland seats come out: “Because every legit need is trying to be addressed by the Music Hall, that makes it that much more difficult — not just for the black or urban shows — to get desirable dates,” Litman says. “So (some shows) just won’t come to the market.”

So I know there was some talk of trying to woo an NHL or NBA team for the Sprint Center. What's the deal with that?
