Finally, JE Dunn has agreed to locate their HQ in the East Village district in downtown KC.

A Kansas City Council committee cleared the way Wednesday for JE Dunn Construction Co. Inc. to build a $30 million headquarters that will anchor the proposed East Village redevelopment just east of City Hall.

Another announcement is expected to come on the East Village District in the next 2 weeks, we assume that it will mean that the GSA will also announce that they will move to the district and become a 2nd anchor.

Also, The Broadway, a 17 floor residential tower proposed for Downtown has just received TIF funding approval. It is expected to start construction in about 8 months, with another 16 months (estimates from estimated ranges) for construction.
It still needs to sell more of it's units, and probably needs more funding, but this was also a major hurdle for this building.

The Downtown Council of Kansas City recently released two more studies, updating the statistics from last year.

The current statistics of Downtown (I am also awaiting additional demographics from the DT Council in an email):

16,292 people
11,259 units (including those under construction)
2,649 units planned (not including the P&L District)
960 units in the Power and Light District (that are still planned)
3,609 total units planned
There has been a 56.3% increase in total units in Downtown since 2000, and a 60% increase in the total population in Downtown.

3,606 hotel rooms at an ave. of 56.5% occupancy
12.8 million sq. ft. of Class A & B office space in Downtown at 21.5% vacancy
+20 million sq. ft. of total office space in Downtown at about 17% vacancy
2.2 million sq. ft. of office space is under construction in Downtown
$4 billion dollar investment in redevelopment Downtown

+100,000 employees work in Downtown
A survey shows that approx. 19% of total Downtown employees would be interested in living Downtown.

8,000 secondary education students enrolled in classes Downtown

Convention Center:
388,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space
23,910 sq. ft. ballroom
18,548 sq. ft. grand hall
46,450 sq. ft. grand ballroom (completes in 2007)
Convention Center bookings are up 100% since 2005.

Nearly 350,000 sq. ft. of additional exhibit space is spread out throughout Downtown.

Unfortunately, one of our biggest projects, the East Village has just been gutted by their idiot developers. They have cut the total amount of units from 1200-1400 to 600-800 so that they can save a 260ftx380ft (a full block), 3 floor parking garage, and keep another full block or two for the GSA.

Unknowingly, they just decreased the density of the project from 100 units per acre, to just 50 units per acre. Which is not enough for a true, big-city urban neighborhood. And they apparently don't want to expand their residential/retail portion beyond the original 4-5 floors as planned, so the district will not be dense, or vibrant, and will have a large border/dead space in the office buildings/parking garage that are currently planned.

Hopefully their developers wise up and fix their stupid mistake.

I agree 100%. Grid does an absolute phenomenal job at taking high quality skyline and construction project photos. Some of my favorite cities he has done are San Diego, Miami, Phoenix (which I think only he could do justice, normally I'm not impressed at all by Phoenix) and of course KC and STL.

Kcmetro, I did realize that the H&R building's glass was so GREEN in the sunlight!! It really stands out in those pics - my eye was immediately drawn to it, especially in the second one above. Keep up the updates with Sprint and P&L too.

Schlitterbahn Water Park will be opening sooner than I expected.....

http://www.kansascitykansan.com/arti...news/news1.txt

Originally, the project was estimated to cost at $452 million; Schlitterbahn now estimates the project to cost $749 million. The company says the increase in cost is a result of more features being added to the park, including expanding a river walk-type attraction that will include retail establishments.

Schlitterbahn promises to add to an already bustling area of tourist activity that includes the Kansas Speedway and Village West. The project will also add more than 3,000 jobs to Wyandotte County.

KC mayor Kay Barnes wins national planning award.....

http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascit...ml?jst=b_ln_hl

The American Planning Association selected Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes to receive the 2007 National Planning Leadership Award for a Planning Advocate.

The APA cited Barnes for forging "strategic partnerships and public consensus" that led to roughly $4.5 billion invested in Downtown's revitalization, including development of the $275 million Sprint Center arena and the $850 million Power & Light entertainment district adjacent to the arena.

AEG, the owner of Sprint Center is offering the NHL Team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, free rent in Sprint Center if they will relocate here to Kansas City.
