Talking Maldives = Shithole

Here's Part 2 of my Honeymoon, the 'One & Only' resort on the island of Kanahura, The Maldives

A couple of views of the Beach villa...

The covered section of the Bathroom:

Looking across the enormous bath to the open-air shower:

The Bedroom, opening out onto the porch and beach:

Self-portrait... Reflected in the porch doors, my back to the sea

First sunset:

The island's jetty; the seaplanes pull up here:

Pool / dining area:

Entrance to the island;

Jetty by Day:

Interior of the island; lush vegetation immaculately kept:

Looking across to the Water villas, note the abundance of fish!:

Looking back to the island from the walkway to the Water villas:

The shallow water strecthes out hundreds of metres to the reef (where the waves are breaking in the distance)

The beach in front of our Villa:

Wildlife!:

Dinner on the beach, at one of the two a la carte restaurants:

Another night, another sunset:

The following night we hired out the private island next to the resort... Sleeping on the beach under the stars:

We arrived before sunset, just us a cook and a waiter. While they started preparing our 10-course dinner, we explored our home for the night:

Looking back across to the main island, in the middle is the jetty and a seaplane

...About to sit down to dinner on our own private paradise:

The following dawn... A heron on the reef:

One of the Thousands of crabs which emerged to greet us that night:

Footprints... left by our waiter and cook as they left us the night before:

Going home... The Air taxi

The unique Maldivian script... Reads right to left like Arabic:

Aerial views of the Maldives:

...The majority of reefs don't break the surface:

Male

I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I did

Beautiful beautiful beautiful! Those pictures show paradise.

I'm still not sure if I'd fancy sleeping under the stars though - too many lizardy things around!

Weren't you scared of something on that island? I'd find it a bit creepy, being away from civilisation - what if your appendix burst, and a storm blew up so you were stranded, and a big wave came, and giant killer whales got disoriented and aggressive and started surfing up the beach trying to grab you? It does look pretty, but I'd be a bit more comfortable with a few dozen people on the island personally - but it wasn't my honeymoon and I'm a notorious coward. Glad you had a nice time.

The Maldives looks like heaven. So gorgeous.
Are these islands vulnerable to any sort of natural disasters?
Cyclones?
What about the 2004 tsunami?
Anyone know?
Otherwise it could be paradise.

I bet you were so glad to get out of that hell hole and back to the calm waters of London's underground during the hottest July on record.

They left us a mobile phone in case any of the aforementioned events occurred. At about 2am I was awoken by some bloodcurdling, banshee-like screaming... On reflection I deduced it must have been Fruit bats fighting, but it scared the bejesus out of me at the time as I was asleep.

I was also a bit jumpy as the previous day a tarantula-sized spider (sandy-coloured, not black) had run within an inch of my foot on the porch when I went to fetch in my camera... I pooed my pants!

The resort was damaged in the Tsunami, the villas were knee-high in water, but it didn't fare too badly. They just used it as an excuse to close for 6 months and completely refurbish. Kanuhura is at the northern end of the Maldives and so Sri Lanka took the force out of the wave as its due East of the atoll. Other resorts were practically destroyed, apparently.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami was such an extraordinary event that I don't think tsunamis are a significant future risk to The Maldives.

The Maldives, as they straddle the Equator, aren't in the path of Indian Ocean Cyclones:

...The Maldives are north of the 'o' of 'Cyclones'
