pic by Mike in TO at urbantoronto.ca showing setback at around the 25th floor....from here on up the tower flares outwards...

pics by 3Dementia at urbantoronto showing the setback and where it is headed (the stacking plan shown is apparently not correct, 23rd floor should read 25th)...

photo taken from inside the tower u/c, showing the view for future hotel guests, looking north, and posted by AndrewLaFleur at urbantoronto...(the round building in the foreground is a concert hall)..

Ritz tower edging skyward
9 May 2009
The Toronto Star

Soon, Toronto can say it's putting on the Ritz.

The Residences of the Ritz-Carlton, the first in a series of upscale condo/hotels being built in the city core, is starting to reach for the sky, with 24 of the 52 storeys being completed.

And, we can tell you, the view from the 24th floor is quite spectacular, as I discovered during a "hard hat" tour of the five-star facility at Wellington and Simcoe Sts.

Currently, there are about 250 workers on site, but that number is expected to jump to more than 500 as finishing work begins on the lower floors, which will be home to 200-plus hotel suites and amenities, including one of the country's best spas.

KPF Associate Architects' innovative building design is one of the most challenging engineering projects ever attempted, according to construction supervisor Terry Cyr.

The "zipper" up the side of the building, which begins to spread "open" at the 24th floor, and the cantilevers from the podium, have called for some innovative building techniques, Cyr said.

One of those innovations includes pumping concrete up to the upper floors instead of hoisting it by crane in buckets.

The large steel trusses that are still visible on the fourth floor of the podium (the spine of the building) were assembled on the Leslie St. Spit and brought to the building site early one Saturday morning and then hoisted into place.

The bones of the stunning lobby (all the interiors spaces were organized by Page+Steele Architects) are in place, with the grand staircase awaiting finishing touches.

Suites start at $1.3 million and top out at $8 million. The price of the penthouse - the Champs Elysees is 10,820 square feet - hasn't been released yet.

This thing is just crawling. It was at ground level well over a year ago and doesn't appear to have moved much vertically in several months. Bay-Adelaide, a much larger building, was fully erected in the same length of time.

Actually, it's risen quite a bit the past month. They're past the setback and the curve is beginning to be noticeable.

And it's not really fair to compare it to Bay Adelaide, as it was constructed with steel which is a much faster process. It would be better to compare it to RBC next door, where both projects struck ground at the same time. Then again, this is a hotel and RBC is an office building.

Thanks for clearing up the distinctions. Still seems awfully gradual, but I'm impatient when it comes to these things.
