Ive been looking for this thread for ages!
I was the structural design engineer for these 4 towers, in conjunction with Arup in Malaysia during 2004. We did the vertical structure (core, columns) and a typical floorplate in the sydney office and then handed it over the Penang office to complete all the rest. Does anyone have any photos of this? I hear it is almost complete now?

And regarding the stability, yes it is very slender, but penang has a very low wind speed environment. After saying that though, after the tsunami a few years ago we were asked to redesign the building for earthquake loads. This meant thickening up alot of the core walls, so it is a very robust building.

All pictures appreciated!

The Cove

Hi,

Has anyone seen the Cove in the last few days and have new photos.

Does anyone have any ideas when this is to be completed, it was initially going to be completed in July 2007, it seem to be progressing at a much faster rate than first thought.

If any one has updated photos I would be rally pleased to see them. Thanks for all the fantastic info that I have seen re The Cove.

This is incredibly exciting!

Here's an Australian construction engineer (your name sounds very Scandinavian to me btw ) finding that his buildings in Malaysia are being realized!

Apart from the fact that they are getting built I'm not really all that pleased with these towers, though. True, the apartments/condos may be great and the views unbelievable, but why place the idential building four times at equal distances and not even rotate them for variety, or give them contrasting colors or other distinguishing features? Hmmmm ... sigh

Thanks for that great view, cooltemper!

Yet I'm afraid the photo proves my point: 4 buildings of identical height & appearance on the same axis and equidistant ... Quite a bit of development, both higher and lower and definitely with more interesting shapes, has to occur in order to absorb these towers successfully in order to generate a visually interesting skyline.

Hi,

Looks like the four blocks are nearly complete, I am amazed as they were only up to about 14 level in April when we saw them, they are going to be very beautiful when comlete I think. Did you actually take photo from Butterworth or on a ferry on the way to Penang.

Hi, I don't post much but I read a lot. I am from Penang too.

I don't know if I should say this since all of you guys a seems pretty hyped and excited about The Cove. Is there anyone out there that would agree with me that the density of the condominium is just too high? I mean four towers of 40 stories (if i am not wrong) for such a small land is quite, in fact VERY dense. It's just too much in my opinion.

Personally I think most developers in Penang are mostly concerned with one thing - Money. The only reason you would want to squize four blocks of condos into such a small land like that would be the sole profit.

One more opinion to express: Fast constuction doesn't neccessarily means better. Years ago, there are talks about how fast the developer of One-Stop, Prangin Mall, BJ Complex and all that construct their building. If you noticed, all these malls developed cracks in the facade. Luckily the developer of The Cove are not the same as the developer of those malls (though they are related).

Note: I am NOT saying that cracks will develop in the facade of The Cove.

Susy

I took the photo from a beach (dirty beach) beside the BORR. They called the beach, Pantai Bersih. (Hahaha...)

I agree that fast not neccessary means better.
Of course the developer built it for profit.
I think wont be too dense lo, cause each block only comprise of 36 or 38 units ma... meaning total is 148 units only.
