is it true that china is now having environmental problem in inner mongolia because river are drying up and the dessert is expanding. i hope the problem can be solve because china is indeed beautiful if you only take care of it and do not over exploit its resources.

Length: 3 months approx

Budget: not much, but not very little...not much money for deep natural excursions

Limits: Going far west as Chengdu...as far north as Great Wall (near Beijing only), as far south as Hong Kong...willing to go fairly , but not gonna stray too far from the main arteries that connect the major cities of HK, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Beijing

Of the places I'v visited I'd recommend...

Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong national parks in northern Sichuan - You can fly there direct from Chengdu so its a good way to get to "epic" scenary fairly easily. They both have a reputation as being very crowded but personally I found that if you spend 2-3 days in Jiuzhaigou and walk around(well get the bus up then walk down ) rather than just one day like most tourists do busing between the big sites you can avoid most of them. Its not somewhere you can just turn up and visit though as transfers/park enterances/hotels need to be pre booked.

Yangshuo/Guilin area - Again well connected by airports and on your rout between Chengdu and Hong Kong. I'd recommend Yangshuo over Guilin personally as its less tacky and much easier to get out of town into countryside. Its a popular area aswell but its so spread out and most of the tourists only do the trip down the Li River so its really easy to get away from the crowds.

Yunnan Province - The Kunming>Dali>Lijiang>Zhongdian route is pretty well served by public transport and is I'd say one of the cheaper ways to get up into the mountains. Again the main towns are very touristed(I really like Dali though) but people tend to do thistlestop tours so if you spend longer and venture a little outside them its supprizingly quite.

I'd guess because international tourists have only just started visiting China in the last decade so right now most people want to see the same few famous sities(Great Wall, Forbinden City, Terracotta Warriors, Guilin Landscape/Li River, 3 Gorges etc). As time passes you'll likey start to get people going back for a second time wanting to see something new and more of the countries sites will become well known.

Personally I think that South West China(Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi) will become very popular with westerners in the next few years. People seem to have this image of the Tibetan plateau as a barren wasteland but the eastern part of it is actually much more similar to the alps or the canadian rockies, very green and fertile.

are you getting a special visa or something? if you just get a regular multiple entry l visa you'll have to leave the country every thirty days, which will put more strain on your budget. you'll have to plan your itinerary accordingly. moreorless made some good suggestions, although instead of flying to the major cities i think you should travel by train. it's a good way to see the countryside, especially in the areas that he mentioned (guilin to nanning to kunming, kunming to chengdu, some very very pretty scenery). i wouldn't suggest taking buses unless it is short distances (under six hours).

Chinese Hakka architecture
Located Fujian Province

These Hakka buildings are found only in the mountainous areas in southwestern Fujian province bordering Guangdong in southern China.

In the 50s, US spy satellites picked up the images of Hakka buildings in southern China, which led the US intelligence to believe that China was in the process of massive buildup of nuclear reactors!

Very interesting type of communal housing. Some of these buildings are 700 years old!

Regular tourist visa lasts for 3 months, but yeah, the visa conditions have increased to match the US ones. Buses are a fun way to see the real China, plus they go everywhere, trains are ok but aren't as well maintained as the expressways.
