BNZ at Harbour Quays

I've come across some renders of the new BNZ building. I'll post them here soon, but in the meantime I've written about them on my blog.

Thanks for that info wellurban!

The design is certainly a varied one, ie; good from some but crap from others. I guess the main drawback is the location. This could have been a new office tower in the core CBD, but instead its a low rise on the fringe. Mind you the exact same thing is happening in Auckland around the outer Viaduct and Quay Park by the Port. Obviously companies these days prefer a low rise, large floor plate solution for their office space, sadly for us high rise, high density city fans.

Low-medium rise is OK on the waterfront, with high-rise best done inland. Super-tall on the waterfront looks a bit tourist-trappish - a la Miami Beach/Gold Coast.

Medium- or high-rise

I think the height of this building is okay for the context: it just has no articulation, flair or architectural interest whatsoever, especially compared to the Meridian building. Marky's right about the Waterloo Quay facade: there seems to be a little more complexity there, and it reads as two or three smaller buildings. But the waterfront angle: uggh!

If Serepisos does manage to build Wellington's tallest building, it will almost certainly be dedicated to his father, Jimmy, and older brother Kosta. Jimmy Serepisos died in 2005 and Kosta succumbed to leukaemia last year."

Given Wellington's topography, it doesn't really have a choice.

Judging by the rest of Wellington's architectural style - the new tower will be AWESOME ... Gr8 news. I am planning a trip to Wellington for the weekend and I can't wait to see my favourite NZ city again.

From what I've seen so far, the sides have been done, and piles for the front section have been driven:

For posterity, I've decided to keep the original post in its April Fools-ed form.
