However there is a big difference between $60,000,000,000 (60 Billion in Dubai) and $12,000,000,000,000 (12 trillion in USA). So 60 billion is nothing in the overall debt and money owed in the world. I am sure Dubai will restructure and get everything back on track. The economy is slowly returning and despite the gloom and doom on TV about this problem, Dubai is not dead and most importantly much better suited to deal with the problem than other cities/countries are. Yes the US is bigger and has more resources, but it looks like thats not enough to save their spending. At least China doesnt buy Dubai debt as it does US. So nothing to worry about folks and remember don't write Dubai off just cause of a hickup. I predict Dubai will get back on track by Q4 of 2011. As the world economy improves revenues and demands for Dubai property will increase and more revenues will be generated by tourism, real estate and financial services. No city is immune and that includes Dubai. However markets have a short term memory and by this time next year I project Dubai markets to be on the upswing. Banks however will take longer to regain confidence but I see lequidity in the Middle East to remain stable but lending would be done more cautiously to companies such as Dubai World.

I agree with what you wrote. Dubai is not the worset or even in the worset cities catagory. Its just the media focusing on the news and its not easy to ignore the media effect any where!
and come on, they declare only delaying the payment of debt of some large companies who works mainly in construction business, not defaulting them!!! how that can be very bad in this time of crazy crisis?!!
Its just news, and if u wanna ignore it and continue living and working you wont feel any difference at all ( of course u have to keep ur job to do that though!)

Dubai will reconstruct itself but I doubt that it will ever return to its former glory. I don't think that we will ever see the gigantic projects like the universe, Dubai waterfront, Nakheel tower and the 2-3 other proposed 500+ meters skyscrapers being built. Dubai will probably finish the current project and then slow down to a normal pace which means no more gigantic mega-impressive projects.

Overall speed surely has slowed down, only one additional floor since the last update and cladding has progressed maybe three or four floors since beginning of December. Assumingly they are focusing more in the interior here now. Maybe a handover in phases?

Well they are building the last two mechanical floors (or maybe a penthouse in one of them) and they are of a different height. It's normal for them to be slower. Am curious to see how the spire will look like.

You sound like the people who thought Russia would default and never be the same again. Well these people were wrong, because Russia dealt with the crisis and has some amazing projects going on now (some are delayed due to the recession). Dubai is a unique place for business and I don't see its glory dissipating anytime soon. Just because the international business community blew this news out of proportions and made it seem like this is worse than what Citigroup and AIG owe the US is simply ridiculous.

Dubai simply put many of the mega-projects on hold and some have been cancelled, but I doubt this will make Dubai lose its status as a financial center. Judging by the reaction of world markets to this non-story, Dubai seems to really be the financial hub of the region and it will complete most of its original projects. As I said just give it some time for markets to lose memory and we will have another housing bubble which will drive the Dubai boom. Funny how the U.S. media jumped on Dubai but don't cover the debt owed by several of their biggest banks and companies which owe many times more what Dubai owes.

On Topic:

Constuction progresses slowly on this tower close to the end, but I have noticed faster pace construction on other towers in Dubai.

Yes, finally - here comes the crown!
Torch looks almost 310m now, won't catch up to Princess Tower anymore, I guess.
