This is bad. One of the most beautiful buildings in the world in going up in ashes. I now hate it's unfortunate ironic name though.

Incredible. From news reports I've seen "no casualties", thank goodness. Scary.

First off, you're replying to a post from four years ago. Second, he wasn't saying it was in north Africa, but that it looked like a north African city. (I guess asserting that it looked unplanned, jumbled, poorly laid out and generally ramshackle, like Cairo or Algiers, which is very true of the city center and basically every part of Dubai other than the gleaming skyscrapers.)

I'm aware of when the post was made, but thank you so much for assuming i can't read date formats or forum page numbers. I know they weren't saying it was in north africa, again.. i can read. If you care to look at cities in the tropics, most of them are (or were) full of small, easy to construct buildings that are made of materials or constructed in a way that keeps the interior cooler than the outside. Often they are made of locally sourced material such as sand, clay, mid, wood, thatching etc & often materials that are easy to transport, such as corrugated metal sheets. My point was that no one who has access to the internet should be so shocked, as the information about UAE's plans to develop a diversified modern economy before the petro-money is gone and more-so that there is indeed more in common with buildings that share a latitude due to the prevailing climate at that latitude, the main difference being how much money was available to build the city and what time period it began its expansion from a smaller settlement to the scale of a city.

Balcony?

From all the videos and news coverage i've found, it seems the fire started near or on one of the corner balconies and simply grew from that fueled by the high winds. Secondary fires below could have been started simply from falling debris that was on fire, and if there was melted glass, that would have been a huge fire danger if it landed on anything flammable.

Hope they find out what caused this and no more such events take place...
