Holy sh*t. I've never seen so much rebar. And it's only 345 meters! That's a baby compared to some of the stuff going up nowadays. They must have built it on pretty weak ground to warrant that kind of...rebar "sheeting."

Anyone else of the opinion, they may as well have poured liquid metal in there and saved the trouble of making it look like grandmas cross stitch? :P

The rebar is reinforcement for the concrete that will be poured in there, yes a 3 metter thick reinforced conrete slab.

The reason for that is not exactly becouse of the weak ground (the deep inserted piles take care of that) but the excess ground water on site. The water will put pressure from beneath and try to push up the entire structure, therefore they have to build a very heavy foundation slab to counter the force.

Yes and the soil is sand which multiplys the problem even on sites not so close to the sea shore.
