Am I the only one who thinks this city is unreal and far ahead of it's time? This is my next vacation spot.

It looks great, but the stub of the pentominium spoils it from that angle imo. Are there any plans yet to do something about what is now an eyesore?

As for all office towers, is there any such category? Plus most of them are combined with hotels, so are mixed use actually. Not sure about Taipei101, maybe that's it.
Ahh yeah forgot about the tallest Hotel.

That would take some doing. The amount of steel and concrete that went into building what's there so far would probably withstand anything short of a nuke.
It's a shame, it would have been a great building. I suppose there are all kinds of legal issues to be resolved before it could be demolished or altered in some way anyway, so it'll be the way it is for the foreseeable future.

It's on-hold, not abandoned.

The owner of the company behind it is out of the country yes, but the contractor still has the cranes on site. When they will be gone, then we can start talking about abandonment

That's a fair point, but if you think about it there's almost certainly no shortage of cranes in Dubai at the moment. Perhaps the crane owner has them coming out of his ears right now and sees leaving them there as free storage until they may be needed elsewhere.
Whatever, that half finished stump stands as testimony to the "wild west" nature of Dubai's financial protection regulations, and ruins the look of the marina which is otherwise amazing and stands as testimony to the "get it done" attitude of Dubai's boom years.

Obviously they abandoned tower with a crane on it. Ryugyong Hotel sat "on hold" for 20 years with crane on the top

Of course but we know well this one is not in standby mode. And if you read nose's theory it all seams very legit.

I don't know if the contractor owns or have rented the cranes, but they are certanly maintaining them. The lights on the crane are on at night, and is certanly not for air traffic safety reason, not when there are 3 - 4 times taller structures just a few meters away.

There have been many cases of towers stopping and then restarting 1 - 3 years later, even during the boom time, so until the contractor abandons the site completely (as it has happened elsewhere) this is not abandoned, just in standby.

There was this 200m tower in poland. On hold for around a year. They took everything off imadietely (even formworks) and now they are finishing it. So I don't think it has any meaning if the cranes are here or not. IMO much more symbolic is the fact that developer left dubai in hurry.

But hey as this is one of two u/c projects left I really like in dubai I really hope they will resume it some day. I just worry anybody taking off this site in future may finish it in much reduced size.

Guinness Registers Dubai Tower as Tallest Residential

"The Guinness Book of World Records officially registered Dubai's Princess Tower as the world's tallest residential building. The building, which recently topped out, at 413 meters tall (1,356 feet) will surpass the present record holder, 23 Marina, by 20 meters (67feet).

The CTBUH lists Princess Tower as topped out, but not complete. The Council does not recognize projects as the tallest until they are completed and occupied.

Princess Tower features indoor-outdoor swimming pools, a gymnasium and aerobics room, recreation rooms, saunas, ground floor retail outlet and high speed elevators.

Princess is part of the world’s tallest residential neighborhood. In addition to Princess and 23 Marina, the neighborhood includes The Torch, a 337-meter tower which finished last year and briefly held the title of tallest residential tower. Construction has stalled on the nearby 516-meter Pentominium, which would pass all the existing towers."
