we (europeans). Dubai is far far away from being a sustainable and pleasent city with all these claustrophobic commieblocks. you should learn with the mistakes of the other countries and not do the same. it is just poor architecture with even poor urbanism

lol, as if you could tell what it feels like to live above the 20th floor.

but you're right, dubai is unbearable, which has made it one of the fastest growing cities on the planet in terms of population. on the other hand, places like lisbon have gone from 807,937 in 1981 down to 545,245 in 2011. inspite of their 'cutting edge' urban planning.

I love Dubai supertalls, truly great architecture, not commie blocks.

But I'd rather live in Lisboa, the city is much prettier and more pleasant place to live. Not to mention that Portuguese women are much hotter (and you can actually see them! lol)

And you know all these because you have lived on both cities?

Anyway, a lighter colour aluminium cladding panels, would have looked much better.

Dubai is growing because all the peasant workers from India and Bangladesh flock there for work.

I'd rather live in Lisbon than Dubai. At least the architecture in Lisbon doesn't make me want to throw up.

Lisbon has definitely got Old World charm and beautiful Jacaranda trees that spectacularly bloom in January. But Lisbon can be shabby (think Alfama) and the prolonged recession that Portugal goes through certainly does not bide well. And it is too much a city that is the prisoner of a past that does not seem to shelter it from the rigours and exigent standards of the 21st century.
On our way to Estoril by train (it was back in 2004 if I remember well) we passed by huge and dilapidated council estates consisting of so-called commie blocks (though the term is discredited now and should not be liberally used) so yes, Lisboa has got its share of non-descript, dull, grim "architecture" (if we can call it this way) too. Like any other city in Europe.

The architecture of Dubai is very utilitarian but also very spectacular in the sense that it is daring, futuristic, ground breaking. Dubai could not care less about minnows like Lisbon.
Yes, Dubai can be tacky but infinitely less tacky than your average American city (think Las Vegas and many others).

Being the fastest growing city is never a good thing. Vegas, which is a lot like Dubai in a lot of ways, had 25,000 people in 1954 and has 600,000 today. Like Dubai, Vegas built everything all at once. Homes, hotels, condos, everything. Unlike Dubai (as far as I'm aware), the global recession hit Vegas probably the hardest. There is almost 200,000 empty houses in Vegas.

I honestly don't see how Dubai has the demand to keep building these massive skyscrapers.

what demographics have to do with what we were discussing? and btw, you should know that a city is beyond the municipal limits, at least in most European cities. our urban area has 2.6 million inhabitants and the metropolitan area 2.9 milion. end off-topic
