The Parana river does the same in Brazil where it meets the silted Amazon

Orinoco

Paraná doesn't meet Amazon. It's one of the largest rivers in the world, whose basin dominates almost the entire Centre-South Brazil, outflowing in the ocean on Buenos Aires/Montevideo.

I guess you meant Solimões (brown) and Rio Negro (black). Both meet near Manaus to form the Amazon river. Orinoco (which is not on the pics) is a Venezuelan river, also outside Amazon basin.

Palm Island

By Australian Architects Hassell

from archdaily.com

Quote:
Architects: Hassell
Location: Chongqing, China
Area: 9,600 sqm
Photographs: Luo Wen

Located to the north of Chongqing on the banks of Palm Lake and the Taiping Reservoir, the Palm Island project is a new hospitality precinct designed by HASSELL.

The key element of the design is water and it has been melded with light and reflections for the project concept. When viewed from afar, the five buildings housing six different restaurants appear to float on the lake, which is the unique feature of the project by Palm Springs Real Estate Development.

Patrons at each restaurant enjoy views of natural water vistas on one side and a private `water courtyard’ on the other, integrated visually through the creation of an infinity pool-style water feature. This gives the architectural impression that the buildings are ‘floating’ on water.

The designers drew inspiration from the geography of Chongqing, which sits at the convergence of the mighty Yangtze River and Jialing River, giving the city its nickname of being ‘connected by two rivers’.

Palm Spring also features the unique interplay of crystal-like glass structure and an external white ceramic covering that interacts with the lake waters to give off a musical quality. The ever-changing reflections during the day give change to a dreamlike quality at night.

Chongqing Greenland Clubhouse

By Shanghai-based Architects PURE Architecture

from archdaily.com

Architects: PURE Architecture
Location: Chongqing, China
Area: 1,100 sqm
Photographs: Shu He Photography
Structural Engineer: Shanghai Baoye Construction Group Corp.
Landscape Design: Collective Landscape Design LLC.
Interior Design: MoHen Design International
Client: Chongqing Greenland Real Estate Development Co.

The Chongqing Greenland Clubhouse is located halfway up the south side of the mountain in Hong’en Temple Forest Park, Chongqing, facing the Jialing River. It is one of twenty-three commercial buildings, initially used as a real estate sales centre for the Greenland Bund Center project.

Designed as a medium for dialogue between the river and mountain, the spatial experience through the building reflects the unique qualities of the dynamic terrain.

Due to the one story height difference between the mountainside entrance and the terrace overlooking the river, the building is composed of two floors. The second level consists of the main entrance, and is primarily used as the real estate exhibition space, containing multimedia presentations and a river view experience. The first floor functions as a sales centre, containing models of the properties and sales spaces. It is also connected to the model homes.

In terms of architecture, the form of the first level is conceived from a glass box, pristine and sturdy. On the second level, the side facing the mountain utilizes stretched triangular shapes to create an undulating contour line, echoing the silhouette of the mountains. Additionally, the heavy gray colour of the external zinc cladding integrates the architecture with the city. In contrast, the surface facing the river is tranquil and lithe, reminiscent of a crystal case; its translucency presents little disturbance to the river scenery while allowing a complete view of the river from the interior of the building. On this basis, the visitor is led on a winding path containing seven different experiences from the second floor entrance to the first floor terrace. Let each visitor experience the beauty of the medium between the site and its surroundings, composed of an infinity pool, river, triangularform, courtyard, and crystal case.

A few years ago there was a competition... and a few firms were shortlisted... then nothing.
Here are a few images of NBBJ's shortlisted design. I may be able to get the other shortlisted design if anyone is interested. Hopefully they will build there... it is too important a site to sit vacant.
what happened with this great project???

Chongqing hit a record high 43 deg. heat! I suggest the architecture should forget putting a artificial lake.

LIANGJIANG NEW AREA WITNESSES BOOMING FOREIGN TRADE

CHONGQING, China, Aug. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In the first half of 2013, imports and exports in China's coastal areas grew as West China continued to gain momentum, and in Chongqing Liangjiang New Area, known as "the window of West China", imports and exports continued to grow at a staggering rate, fueled by the laptop and automobile industries among others.

Statistics during the period showed that the area's total import and export volume increased by 43% from the previous year to slightly over 13 billion US dollars, constituting nearly half of Chongqing's total imports and exports, with mechanical and electrical products like laptops, automobiles and motorcycles being major export contributers.

Monitoring data of the 69 key enterprises in Liangjiang New Area indicated that the output value of foreign-funded enterprises ascended substantially in the first 7 months of the year to 79.7 billion yuan, up 90.8% year on year, while that of enterprises invested by Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan went up by 22.2% to 42 billion yuan from a year earlier, which highlighted the role of Liangjiang New Area as an essential investment destination for multinational enterprises.

As the first state-level new area in inland China, Liangjiang New Area has become a high-profile investment destination for multinational enterprises since its economy and imports and exports grew by more than 20% and 80% respectively for three consecutive years.

Taking advantage of the location at the intersection point between the Yangtze River's "gold waterway" and the Yuxin'ou International Railway, Liangjiang New Area is becoming the bridgehead for China's trade to Europe.

The Media Tour along Yuxin'ou (Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe) International Railway kicked off in Chongqing on July 30, 2013.

A multimedia news group, consisting of 31 journalists from People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, Chongqing Daily, CQTV, CQNEWS, etc., set off from Tuanjiecun, also known as the origin of Yuxin'ou Railway, via Xi'an traveling on to Lanzhou, Urumqi, the Alataw Pass, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, to Duisburg, Germany.

This media tour is not only an important activity that introduces Chongqing's urban image to foreign countries, but also a rare chance to display "made-in-China" and "made-in-Chongqing" to countries along the railway.

Construction began on a logistics industrial park, with a total investment of 80 million U.S. dollars from Vailog S.r.l., in Liangjiang New Area on July 2.

This industrial park, with the functions of storage, distribution, settlement, management and operation, is to introduce a package of distribution and operation centers from the world's well-known firms. Besides, it will attract some transnational companies engaged in auto spares distribution, luxury products, etc.

The new area is speeding up the construction of a distribution center serving exports to European countries.

With the operation of this center, Liangjiang New Area will not only develop itself into inland China's most advanced manufacturing center, but also become an international logistics center and trade center for the inland regions, achieving the strategic goal set by the central government.

4G network to cover urban Chongqing by Jan. 2014

CHONGQING, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) – Southwest China's Chongqing municipality will accelerate TD-LTE 4G construction and the urban region is expected to be fully covered by 4G networks before the end of January 2014, according to the local communication administrator.

Meanwhile, the municipality will build about 10,000 TD-LTE base stations and will have all its urban and rural regions covered by 4G networks within the coming two years.

Xing Haiying, head of the Chongqing Communication Administration, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology had given approval to China's three basic telecom operators, China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), China Unicom (CHU.NYSE; 00762.HK; 600050.SH) and China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK), to launch large-scale 4G network construction in the city.

It is scheduled to cover the urban region of Chongqing with 4G networks before the end of January 2014, complete 4G core network reform before the end of March and build about 10,000 base stations with more than five billion yuan to cover both urban and rural regions of the municipality.

Myanmar-to-China gas pipeline enhances China's energy security
4 November 2013
Xinhua

BEIJING -- China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the state-owned Chinese oil giant, announced on October 20 the full operation of the trunk line of the Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline, which is designed to transport 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.

Energy experts say that the commissioning of the gas pipeline means that China has built four major energy passages and established a diversified energy supply pattern, which is of utmost significance for the country's energy security.

-- Myanmar-to-China gas pipeline completed

The Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline, also called the China-Myanmar natural gas pipeline, has gone into full operation after the completion of the end section connecting the cities of Lufeng and Guigang in southwest China.

The trunk line measures 2,520 kilometers, with 793 km in Myanmar and 1,727 km in China. It is designed to transport 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. Natural gas resources will mainly come from gas fields within Myanmar.

Construction of the gas pipeline began in 2010. It is part of the Myanmar-China Oil and Gas Pipeline project, which also includes a crude oil pipeline that can transport 22 million tonnes of crude oil annually. The Myanmar section of the gas pipeline started to deliver natural gas to China in late July.

According to CNPC, upon the completion of the Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline, natural gas pipelines in China measure a total length of 60,000 km. In addition, the country has 26,000 km of crude oil pipelines and 20,000 km of product oil pipelines. The pipeline network covers 31 provinces and special administrations and can benefit nearly 1 billion people.

-- Energy security enhanced

After the trunk line of the Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline comes on stream, natural gas will be transported to south China's Guangdong via the pipeline and then a branch line of the Second West-to-East natural gas pipeline. Gas will also be distributed through the Zhongwei-Guiyang natural gas pipeline. Tongliang in southwest China's Chongqing is likely to be the first Chinese city with access to natural gas from Myanmar.

Cities along the Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline, including Kunming, Guiyang and Guigang, are speeding up construction of municipal distribution pipelines.

Later this year or in early 2014, natural gas will be supplied for the first time through pipeline to China's Yungui plateau. The first batch of cities that will gain access to pipeline natural gas will be Dali, Baoshan, Anning, Anshun and Guiyang.

According to Wu Hong, general manager of CNPC's pipeline construction department, the Myanmar-to-China natural gas pipeline will be connected with the West-to-East natural gas pipeline project via the Zhongwei-Guiyang pipeline. It will enable the company to better allocate natural gas resources from the two major pipeline projects and enhance its ability to ensure gas supply to downstream users in case of emergency.

Lin Boqiang, head of the Energy Economic Research Center of Xiamen University, says that the pipeline enables China to import natural gas via its southwest. It can greatly diversify risks associated with energy imports and is significant for ensuring China's energy security. (CFF)

the architecture looks pretty cool but this first shot shows you just how close this orderly, clean facade is to the degradation beyond the fence.

reminds me of those pictures of brazil where million dollar ultramodern mansions are separated by a fence from dense slums. they could have integrated the building into the environment to improve it, rather than isolating it as a pristine hideaway so starkly contrasted against its surroundings. it all looks very pretty but this is certainly not socially conscious architecture.

Construction violations cause fatal bridge pier collapse

CHONGQING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Inadequate cofferdams, illegal construction and poor supervision resulted in the bridge pier collapse which killed 11 people in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality in mid-October, local authorities said on Thursday.

A pier of an under-construction bridge across the Yangtze River in Fengdu County collapsed and became submerged in water on Oct. 12, leaving 10 workers and a local resident dead and two other people injured.

Investigations have placed the blame for the accident on the inadequate and unstable structure of steel cofferdams at the construction site, severe defects in the project procedures and regulation violations during the project supervision process, according to sources with the work safety committee under the Chongqing Municipal government.

Further investigation is under way. The people responsible for the accident will be punished, the sources said.
