No, never heard of it. I only know Cuba and Jamaica are good vacation spots in the middle america. Maybe Cancun is famous to U.S people because it is closed to the U.S.

I just read a tourism article written by a Chinese who has been to Cancun and he said the SanYa city in China is even better than Cancun. IMO, SanYa is just ok so I am not interested in Cancun anymore.

Don't get me wrong I just posted for fun.
The city is not really well known in China seriously.

So yes, if you are young and like parties you should at the very least have heard of it

When the project was announced a few years back, other compact car makers in India, Suzuki and Hyundai, said it was not possible to build a car so cheap. The cheapest car available in India is $4,500, and this proposed car is $2,200, half that price. But the Tata group chairman, Ratan Tata, is determined to prove that it is technologically possible to build this car and to realize a project that is truly pioneering in the automobile industry worldwide. Tata Motors has already spend quite a bit on R&D for this project; they have already selected a site in eastern India for manufacturing facility of this car to go onstream by 2008..
Well.. we'll have to see what comes up!! while $2200 is quite cheap, lets hope it is not a crossover between an autorichshaw and a mini.

The track record of Tata Motors as an innovative company lends confidence that they can pull off this project. In 1999, they launched Tata Indica with an investment of $500 million in R&D, the first car completly designed and developed by an Indian automobile company.
Much of that $500 million went to italy, who designed the car( i mean the complex parts of the car like the chasis and the transmission). But for a $2,200 they will have to do it themselves or the cost will shoot up.

i am not saying they cant, but dont compare it with the indica design. we'll just have to wait and see what comes up.

OMG!! if these chinese cars get free access to US and european markets, the local industry will be out of business... i mean very good looking and sooo cheap. Incredible!!!

It is certainly not true that most of the design for Tata Indica was done in Italy. The outerbody (chasis) shape design was procured from an Italian company. However, car design and development is much more than just the outerbody shape, and all that was done in India. It is well known and appreciated in India that it was an indigenous engineering effort. The substantial R&D investment of $500 million is a proof of that.

I am also curious to see what the $2,200 car will look like. It will be a miracle if looks as good as Indica.

I am sorry but I mistakenly gave the wrong data. The TOTAL cost of Tata Indica compact car project was $550 million; this includes design & development (R&D) and setting up of the manufacturing facility. A similar project (starting from scratch) in US/Europe/Japan is estimated to cost $2 billion.

Afterall, it is just a car and not an airplane that would require half a billion dollars just in R&D

This is a chinese car thread, so I will leave this topic at that.

How about you start an India car thread on this forum.
I believe many people would like hear and see what it is being developed in India.
Please share.

Oliver and Alex, thanks for the encouragement. An Indian car thread already exists in the Infrastructure & mobility forum:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=248609

It has pictures of cars/SUVs made by Indian companies Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra & Reva as well as multinational companies manufacturing in India.

Tata Motors is clearly the most innovative and ambitious among the Indian automobile manufacturers. Besides the domestic Indian market, they are expanding their presence in Asia through aquisition of Daewoo commercial vehicles (South Korea), in Europe through an alliance with Fiat (Italy), and Africa by entering the South African market. Their revenues for 2005 was $5.5 bn; an investment of $2 bn is planned to expand manufacturing in India.

Tata Motors is part of the $22 bn Tata group; whose group company Tata Steel (2005 revenues of $4.5 bn) has been in the news recently for planning an ambitious $9 bn aquisition bid for British-Dutch steel maker Corus (2nd largest steel company in Europe and 9th worldwide). Another group company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is India's biggest IT services company with 2005 revenues of $3 bn.

Besides the Indian companies, multinational automobile companies have recently announced major investment plans in India with the goal of exports as well as catering to the domestic market. This includes Suzuki ($2 bn), Hyundai ($1.4 bn), Volkswagen ($550 mn), Honda ($350 mn), GM ($300 mn), Toyota ($90 mn).
