Almost every language handles the UK as "England" for it was the prevalent, dominant kingdom which imposed its yoke over the others (Scots, Welsh, Irish).

I agree. Argentina is becoming a mature democracy, and will vigorously pursue its claim to the Falklands through diplomatic means (as is its right) with a chance that if it does so with some intelligence, they might actually get somewhere. Blame your Junta for the current deadlock.

The reason people are seriously talking about an attack on the Falklands is a combination of ignorance of Argentina, a proper war is exciting (as opposed to following yankees to the Mid-East for some child slaying oil mission) especially as we both crashed out on penalties at the World Cup and a Peruvian Idiot who thinks his nations greatest achievement is sending a couple of war planes and a cake saying "good luck Argies" to you, in an eventual military defeat is evidence of the greatness of the Peruvian Nation and surely a sign that the Inca People will soon rise again to be gods amongst men.

I have always been of the opinion that britain continuing to occupy the Falklands is an expensive and stupid waste of time.
I have never been there, but I understand that it is a windswept place with few natural resources and the only reason we continue to hold onto it is ego.

Does anyone know if it has any military significance? Why would we be interested in keeping an eye on Argentina if it wasn't for these islands ?

Great post, but the Junta was not put there by "ours", believe me. Argentina was already a consolidated democracy when the yank-backed-up putsch took place in 1976. In fact the biggest achieve in terms of diplomatic negotiations over the disputed archipelago arised in 1974 , when Foreign Office outed intentions of building strategies towards double souvereignity over a period of 40 years or so until total and clean handover. All this happened during Juan D. Peron`s presidential period (voted by 67% of population after 18 years in exil-again because of militar dictatorship) who inmediately ordered the diplomatic corps to carry the matter with no hesitation against the wishes of the hardliners who do only accept total retreat of british dominion. He unlickily died a couple of weeks later, a consolidated democracy it was but verticalist in any case, as it still is, the country fell in total anarchy which partially led to the junta putsch.
As you might imagine, the hardliners took over and sent those negotiations to a dust covered, forgotten ladder somewhere.
