When they put together this group of architects, this is what was going to happen. The point is to create something new and dynamic, and each design is that, and reflective of their designers' ideas. Yet, they will share similar materials and work well together despite their contrasts. It isn't just what I envisioned either, but it will be a big success if the designs are built close to what is presented.

in my opinion and from TV and pics, the Twins where fantastic and represented the power and attraction of new york, the american dream, the new york dream (and trust me im french the new york dream is very high here, new york is seen like the mecca or babylon) because they DID ALIENATE themselves from the skyline.

these new towers are beautiful but they just fit in the skyline, making the skyline loosing its power and fascination and 'american dream' factor

I personally think the harmony between the 4 is perfect. The way they step up in height from right to left is almost like the worlds staircase to heaven! I think Maki's tower could benefit from a bit more detail, but other than that the masterplan is excellent. They work great s individual buildings, but brilliantly as a group. I like the way they are both at the same time, individual towers and a group! I don't think it would have worked well if they were all the same like in the massing renders.

I think that they're all better than FT.

Anyway, about the twin thing, it's there only if you look at the reflections in the water.

NYC Unveils 9/11 Memorial Hole

From The Onion:

NEW YORK—Days before the fifth anniversary of the destruction of New York's World Trade Center by terrorists, city officials gathered on the site where the Twin Towers once stood to dedicate the newly completed 9/11 Memorial Hole.

"From the wreckage and ashes of the World Trade Center, we have created a recess in the ground befitting the American spirit," said New York Governor George Pataki from a cinderblock-and-plastic-bucket-supported plywood platform near the Hole's precipice. "This vast chasm, dug at the very spot where the gleaming Twin Towers once rose to the sky, is a symbol of what we can accomplish if we work together."

well, 2 is the flashiest fo sho. 1,3,4 seems a bit more no-nonsense-styled than 2, which I like.

In order, I like 1,3,4,2,7. (what happened to 5 and 6?)

2 is pretty cool, 3 is ok, and 4 is terrible, wtf, let me design 4. 1 2 and 3 are all good designs but have nothing to do with eachother, im kinda lost on that.

I just read the official heights on www.wtc.com

1 WTC - 1,776'
2 WTC - 1,254'
3 WTC - 1,155'
4 WTC - 947'

Tower 2 is nothing short of awsome, same goes for tower 3. Tower 3 reminds me of the john hancock centre with the crossbeams. Tower 4 is, well, I guess you can't have em all
We gave world architects a tabula rasa, some of the most primo real estate in the world, and the best they could come up with after several years of bickering was a mish-mash of ill-matched designs. When else will Manhattan offer up 16 contiguous acres in the heart of a skyscraper district for development? Probably never.

Ground Zero could have become a new Rockefeller Center with a glittering centerpiece of technological power and glory, and instead it's been turned into a pathetic recreation of one of two dozen world city downtowns and a huge, bleak memorial. Unlike the Sears, Empire, and WTC buildings, nobody is going to be able to identify any of these generics out of a police lineup; they look like they could have been plucked from Shanghai, Dubai, or Hong Kong.

As I stated before, Yamasaki was a genius. He gave New York and America iconic structures of such POWER that even barbarians from halfway across the world recognized and grated against their imposing presence.

IMO A great design is more important than sheer power in this day and age. People want slick, elegant towers today, not big brutes like Sears.(Not that I have anything against Sears, I really like it, but I prefer more slender towers)
