I had never heard of it till yesterday when my morroccan friend (assahibi ) said that his sister married to an shia morroccan.

There must be a small community since many Moroccans converted to shia after the Iranian revolution. But officially Moroccan are Sunnis from the Maleki Madhab

Plus a map will obviously show the country as well as its neighbouring regions.

Its true that it has southern neighbors, but I think another reason is that information is much more easily accessible in European countries than some SubSaharan countries. This may be because there is more research being performed in the countries, as well as the fact that the countries are more open to share and encourage them.
I think Moroccan government is trying to encourage the research especially as the country's literacy rate increases...
