Tianjin Airport's new terminal opens (opened on April 28) Looks a lot better than the old industrial-park style terminal:

Tianjin's new air terminal begins operation
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-04-29 11:33

A new terminal was put into operation on Monday at a standby airport for this summer's Olympics in the northern Chinese seaside city of Tianjin, in preparation for a passenger surge in August.

The new terminal, covering 116,000 square meters in floor space, or about five times that of the old, can handle 10 million passengers and 500,000 tonnes of cargo a year, a spokesman with the Tianjin Binhai International Airport said.

It is expected to receive more than 300,000 passengers during the Olympics period, the spokesman said.

Construction on the new terminal and other expansion projects was started on August 8, 2005 and completed on December 25 last year, with a total investment of nearly 3 billion yuan ($428.7 million), he said.

Through the expansion work, 40,000 square meters of warehouse, 290,000 square meters of parking apron, and 62,000 square meters of car parks were also built.

Meanwhile, the runway was lengthened from 3,200 meters to 3,600 meters, which can meet accommodate Boeing B747-400s and Airbus A380s.

The old terminal, which has been in operation for 18 years, will be used to handle cargo in the future.

The Tianjin airport is a major alternate airport for Beijing Capital International Airport during the Olympics. It handled 1.15 million passengers and 33,000 tonnes of cargo in the first three months this year, up 40 percent and 24.6 percent year-on-year, respectively.

Tianjin, about 120 km southeast of Beijing, is the venue for football preliminaries for the 29th Olympics.

New Ikea:

Ikea plans $60m for Tianjin store
By Wang Yu
Updated: 2008-04-22 07:05

Ikea plans to pour in around $60 million to set up a retail outlet in Tianjin, aiming to cash in on the fast development of the coastal municipality.

The home furnishing retailer has inked a primary deal with Tianjin Dongli district, and the construction of its Tianjin outlet may kick off this summer, Ian Duffy, president of IKEA Asia-Pacific, told China Daily on the sidelines of the ongoing China Tianjin Trade Fair and Investment Talk.

The store, spanning 600,000 sq m, will be Ikea's fifth franchised store in China, after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.

The project will embody functions of shopping, entertainment, leisure, culture and catering, according to Tianjin Mayor Huang Xingguo.

"Tianjin is, without any doubt, one of the most progressive and rapidly growing cities in China now," Duffy said. The city will offer a golden business opportunity for Ikea, he added.

The Swedish company is working hard not only on its product designs but also on the building that will house the store and its energy sources.

"What we are planning in Tianjin is a leading-edge development in environmental protection," the Ikea executive said.

Along with 13 other members of a European retail roundtable, Ikea recently announced its commitment to energy efficiency and wider use of renewable energy.

The retailers vowed to reduce energy consumption per square meter of commercial space by at least 20 percent by 2020 and work to surpass a European Commission renewable energy target of 20 percent.

Mayor Huang said Ikea will gain much from a large commercial project in Tianjin, given the city's fast development.

Refusing to elaborate on the potential commercial returns from Tianjin, Duffy said Ikea will be successful in the city and will have a sound partnership with the local government.

The retailer has been doing business in the nation for 10 years now. It plans to open new stores this year in Shenzhen, Nanjing and Dalian, and to continue opening at least one or two stores every year in the country.

Some 71 projects were signed during the 15th China Tianjin Trade Fair and Investment Talk, including Ikea's, on Sunday, with the contracted value reaching 57.42 billion yuan.

Sino-Singapore Tianjin 30km2 eco-city in Binhai New Area:

Sino-Singapore Tianjin eco-city to be completed in 10 to 15 years

www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-07 20:27:17

TIANJIN, May 7 (Xinhua) -- A 30-square kilometer eco-city project in the northern port city of Tianjin, which is jointly planned by China and Singapore, is expected to break ground in July and be completed in 10 to 15 years.

The three-square-kilometer start-up area will start to be developed in three to five years, according to a plan revealed on Tuesday.

This urban development project, second joint project by the two governments after the China-Suzhou Industrial Park in east China's Jiangsu Province, will not take place at the expense of the environment as buildings in the Sino-Singapore Tianjin eco-city will be energy efficient, according to the plan.

The eco-city is 40 kilometers from Tianjin city and 150 kilometers from Beijing.

One third of the land to be used is salt pan, one third is deserted beach and one third is water.

"To build the eco-city in a harsh natural environment shows the ecological essence of the project," said Lin Xuefeng, deputy head of the eco-city administration commission.

When completed, the eco-city is expected to be a model for other cities in China.

China Daily: Work begins at Tianjin's eco-city

2008-08-13 07:39

Construction of the transport infrastructure within the 4-sq-km Sino-Singaporean Eco-city start-up area of Tianjin has begun, a local official said Tuesday.

Construction of the 30-sq-km city will start next month, Gou Lijun, director of the Tianjin Binhai New Area administrative committee said at a press conference held at the Beijing International Media Center.

In April, the Chinese and Singaporean governments approved a development plan for the eco-city. It will be the second flagship Sino-Singaporean cooperation project since the Suzhou Industrial Park and will draw on Singapore's eco-conservation experience in regard to efficient energy use and environmental protection.

The green development model will guide Tianjin, a city of limited resources, in sustainable development, analysts have said.

The index system will act as a major eco-protection criterion for the city's ecological targets, drafted and approved by the two governments, Gou said.

The key performance index includes air, water, transport, forestation, energy efficiency and waste management, earlier reports by Singapore-based Zaobao Daily said.

But it will not, like certain other cities, pursue a "zero CO2 emission", the newspaper quoted Ma Baoshan, the minister of Singapore's National Development Department, as saying.

More than 90 percent of the traffic in the eco-city will be low-pollution public transport, Chinese newspapers reported.

The eco-city will be guided by Singapore's use of solar and wind power, and experience in rainwater recycling, as well as wastewater treatment and desalinization of sea water, Gou said.

The eco-city, which is located 40 km from Tianjin city and 150 km from Beijing, will cover 10 sq km of salt pan, 10 sq km of desert and 10 sq km of watered, but low quality, land, he said.

Located along the Jiyun River in Tianjin's Hangu district, the area will comprise residences, commercial space and factories, all of which will comply with international standards of energy use and environmental protection, he said. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2...nt_6930053.htm

Official Website:

The Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city is the result of a collaborative agreement between China and Singapore to jointly develop a socially harmonious, environmentally friendly and resource-conserving city in China. Envisioned as a city where people live in harmony with one another, and where economic development will not be at the expense of the environment, the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city will serve as a model for sustainable development for cities in China and other parts of the world.

When fully developed, the 30 km2 Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city will be home to about 350,000 residents, living in inclusive, close-knit communities with strong social support networks.

The Eco-city will be economically vibrant and provide good employment opportunities for its residents. Its economy will complement the nearby Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA), and focus on tertiary and service industries, as well as environmental-related activities in areas such as tertiary education and Research & Development.

Environment-friendly features, such as the adoption of renewable energy, green buildings, green transportation and effective water and waste management systems, will be incorporated in the development of the Eco-city. Effective tried-and-tested technologies will be adapted to the needs of the Eco-city and implemented, to ensure that its concept is scaleable, practicable and replicable.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 10 to 15 years.
