Exactly how far is Midtown from Downtown Atlanta? I ask because I personally have always considered Midtown to be a part of downtown Atlanta, yet most people consider them to be two seperate skylines. I certainly understand how someone could view them seperately but just by sheer distance, at least in pictures, it is the same place to me.

IMO, what I consider Midtown Houston doesn't have a significant skyline at all as of yet. The Museum District/Medical Center does, so in comparison I suppose that would be the best thing to compare to Midtown Atlanta (in actual size). I think it's unfair to try to compare Midtown Atlanta to Midtown Houston.

*note* To those that are familar with Houston and have been to Atlanta recently, would you consider the distance between Downtown Atlanta and Midtown Atlanta the same distance between Uptown Houston and Greenway Plaza?

Anyway, Those shots of Buckhead are crazy. I actually am more of a fan of Buckhead's skyline than actual downtown Atlanta. I love all of the modern architecture Buckhead has.

Ever been to NYC? I went there this past June and it is the biggest city i have ever seen. It is amazing to see. I was in Atlanta last month and went to the buckhead at linux mall. I really like how you can drive all the way from CBD to the buckhead down peachtree and its not really that bad of a drive at all. There are lots and lots of towers going up in atlanta.

Damn I am so jealous of ATL. Houston you have a problem. ATL has caught up and fast. It will be nice to see these two cities battle it out.

Battle? I'm afraid you'll be waiting a long time to see that because neither city are battleing each other so no, Houston does not have a problem.

Fantastic!!! Thanks. For people that haven't been to Atlanta lately - that last picture is taken from the edge of Midtown looking northeast to Buckhead. Per somebody's question a little earlier, the heart of Midtown is about a mile-and-a-half to two miles from the heart of downtown Atlanta --- but in reality, they are pretty much merged into one continuous skyline at this point.

IT is nice from far away. Unfortunately, it is almost entirely unwalkable.

That's just awe inspiring for a third skyline!

Much envy and respect/congratulations from me.

Quick question.

What's driving all those buildings? Especially in the midtown and Buckhead areas?

I gotta say:

Atlanta >> Houston when it comes to skylines.

Seems some things never change.

^I was just there last week. Once you get off Peachtree, the density drops quickly. It has walkable stretches but as a whole, its not really pedestrian friendly. A streetcar line would do wonders for Buckhead. Nevertheless, it has some great examples of modern highrise architecture.

Here are a few images that I snapped to prove my point.

Great pics, Lakelander. Hope you had a nice visit.

Sorry, but the density issue is a moot point here. These areas are all adjacent to single family neighborhoods. They don't mind the massive density along the main corridors, and they enjoy being next do it, but they DON'T want it within their single family neighborhoods - and I don't blame them.

My whole point was that indeed, all of these areas are walkable. Your pics provide ample proof of that fact.

I had a great time. I'm really impressed with the amount of infill growth taking place in Atlanta. Personally, at this time I would not consider Buckhead walkable (compared to..say South Beach, New Orleans, Boston, Charleston, etc.), because there are portions that resemble Jacksonville's Southside, minus the highrises. However as time goes on, it will fill in. Here is now I would classify some of these Buckhead images.

Ex. - Not pedestrian friendly. Most would prefer to drive, as opposed to walking to adjacent destinations in this environment.

This image really captures the feel of Buckhead. The left side of the street is urban and walkable. The right side of the street could be in any suburb across the country.

Ex. - What Buckhead is at this point. A historically, low density suburban commercial corridor filling in with high density development. Some areas are walkable, others are not.

Here's a question: at what point will Buckhead edge out Downtown Atlanta? I seriously think it's only a handful of very tall skyscrapers away.

Overall high rise numbers, I suppose. Density is quite another matter. But it seems DT Atlanta is quiet compared to Buckhead. Even the clusters in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody appear to be stuck in the early '90s.

Hey Everybody, I'm new to the forum. I was looking at the pics of Buckhead Atlanta and wanted to say they are amazing. I'm from NC and believe that Buckhead could rival Charlotte uptown. I'm not knocking Charlotte or anything, but Buckhead looks like it's catching up.
