Work is progressing well at Golf Course road too. A part of the road has been barricaded from the median. Most of the road is yet to be barricaded from median. In this stretch, flyovers and second phase of Gurgaon metro will run parallel.

New 5.5km road coming up to beat BRT blues

An end to motorists' BRT woes may finally be in sight. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has revived a major project to build a 5.5km arterial road running almost next to the Bus Rapid Transit corridor that will enable commuters to avoid the jam-ridden road and will also create parking space for 3000-odd vehicles.

The Rs 233-crore project envisages constructing a road over a drain — the Chirag Dilli nullah. The four-laned road will connect Press Enclave road to Ring Road at Andrews Ganj, passing through Sheikh Sarai, Chirag Delhi, Panchsheel Enclave and Greater Kailash-I. The drain will first be covered for which work has begun this month at Sanwal Nagar.

The project, being built under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, is scheduled to be completed by March next year. It was envisaged way back in 2007.

"The road will be breather as there are long jams on BRT. The project will ease parking problems along the stretch as well. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed on this road. Parking lots will be built on the side of the road. A study will be conducted to determine the demand for parking at various points," said a senior South Corporation official associated with the project.

To avoid traffic jams, entry to these parking lots will be from colonies along the road, the official added.

The project was conceived in 2007, with the erstwhile MCD bearing half the cost. But it got the final nod only in December 2009. The project's file has since been doing the rounds of different departments of the corporation.

"For a project such as this to start, approval from several departments has to be taken. Also contributing to the delay was the fact that three agencies are involved - Centre, state government and the civic body. They will bear 35%, 15% and 50% of the cost, respectively. Approval from other agencies such as pollution authority and ASI was also required. Now with all approvals in place, covering of the drain has started and the project will be completed by 2014," said Manish Gupta, commissioner of South Corporation.

Officials also said several parks will be built along the stretch for children to play in. Around Rs 18 crore has already been spent on the project, they added.

But south Delhi residents, who face nightmarish traffic jams every day at the BRT, are upset that the project took this long to start. "Rakesh Mehta, the MCD commissioner in 2006, had then said that the alternative route to BRT will be worked out soon. Ajay Maken, then Union urban development minister, expedited the work but the file has been pending before the corporation. Politics, credit-taking and lethargic attitude of the corporation has stalled this work for three years," said Keshav Aggarwal of Chittaranjan Park RWA.

Leaders of BJP, which rules the South Corporation, have gone ahead and laid the project's the foundation stone although the Congress is also a stakeholder, with the Centre and state government funding 50% of the project.

Exclamation

This underpass is undoubtedly going to become an xtremly important and shortest link between Noida, S.Vihar n S.Delhi.. it is very much underrated and doesn't seem to catch any attention in the forum yet..
It is perhaps one of the most crucial infra project in S.Delhi at the moment..

Well that's because there are very few members in Delhi sub-section. There are other big ticket projects too but are not discussed much. 1000 cr ORR signal free project and extension of Baralpullah elevated roads are few of such projects.

Barapullah to reach Aurobindo Marg now, Mayur Vihar later

Delhi’s first-ever elevated corridor - the Barapullah flyover - commissioned during the Commonwealth Games, is all set to spread its arms.

The elevated road from Sarai Kale Khan to Nehru Stadium - built over the Barapullah drain at a cost of Rs.498 crore in the phase 1- will now be extended till Aurobindo Marg in phase 2.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday laid the foundation for the extension of the elevated Barapullah flyover in a function organised at Sarai Kale Khan near Sundial.

It will have six additional loops connecting Ashram, INA Market, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg and the DND flyway to the corridor, said officials.

Work on Barapullah phase 2 is likely to start within a few days. Tenders for the project were floated in early December.

“The extension under the phase 2 would cost Rs.530 crore,” said a Delhi government official.

Dikshit said, “The extension of the Barapullah elevated flyover will prove to be another feather in the crown of Delhi’s infrastructure. The government has, in principle, also agreed to extend the elevated road from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar in the third phase.”

The extension between Sarai Kale Khan and INA Market at Aurobindo Marg has already been given the go-ahead by the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) (UTTIPEC) and Archeological Survey of India (ASI).

The 3.98 km-long extended elevated road will have a dual carriageway of nine metres each. A total of six loops will be constructed to provide connectivity from Barapullah Elevated Road to Ashram, from Siddharth Enclave to Barapullah Elevated Road, from Lala Lajpat Rai Marg into the elevated corridor to Aurobindo Marg, near Sanchar Bhawan for movement from elevated corridor to Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, and at Thyagraj Stadium for movement into the elevated corridor to Sarai Kale Khan.

They may have to take a U turn up ahead and then enter Barapullah road. A trumpet interchange would have been better.
