Go-Ahead For Wazirabad Span After Sreedharan Okays It
New Delhi: Five years after it was first conceptualised, Delhi’s Signature Bridge at Wazirabad may finally become a reality. The project has received the green signal from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and has also been okayed by DMRC chief E Sreedharan whom the CVC had, in its report, asked the government to consult.
The project was referred to the CVC by the Delhi cabinet last month and the CVC’s report reached the government about 15 days ago. The reason for the CVC’s opinion being sought was the fact that when the tenders for the bridge were floated, it was found that the lowest bid of Rs 845.97 crore was nearly double the initial estimate of Rs 459 crore drawn up in 2002 when the idea was first mooted. The CVC had okayed the proposal with the rider that the government should go back to Sreedharan for his opinion. Sreedharan had been consulted earlier too about the project. In his report, which the government received about a week ago, Sreedharan had reportedly said that if the government wanted to ‘‘own a Rolls Royce’’ it could not possibly look at the Ambassador prices — a statement indicating that given the ambitious nature of the project, the government should be willing to pay the kind of moolah required for it. Both reports will once again go to the cabinet and government sources say that now that the final hurdle in the construction has been cleared, work on the bridge should start soon. The bridge is to be made entirely out of imported steel and will have features like lift and a restaurant. The bridge has been envisaged as a symbol that will be the ‘‘signature’’ of the capital, hence the name. Charles Correa, consultant, DUAC has approved the final design of an ‘‘asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge with bow-shaped steel pylons of 154 m and a main span of 675 m’’. Apart from usual cost escalation because of inflation worth five years, the change in design as suggested by Correa was also one of the reasons for cost escalation. The are changes made in the ‘‘scope of the work’’ like the area of the bridge, the deck and the stilted portions and a change in material — imported steel — that was not accounted for in the initial plan. The bridge which will replace the existing two-lane bridge-cum-barrage at Wazirabad will have dual carriageways and a composite deck. After the tender bids were found to be way above the initial estimates, the PWD engineer-in-chief had independently examined the project and he had come up with the recast estimate of Rs 993.11 crore — exceeding the bid by more than Rs 100 crore.

Why build such an expensive 'signature' bridge. Spend the money elsewhere.

8-laned Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Delhi's pride & rest of India's envy. I believe the whole stretch is elevated. Just wonderful.

The 28kms stretch has nine really long flyovers with some being ~2kms long. only one flyover is left to be opened on the delhi side.
__________ 4 Noida underpasses, flyover get go-ahead Quote:
