Phase V of widening Ring Road begins

Phase V of widening Ring Road begins

This will reduce travel time, improve connectivity

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday laid the foundation stone for the eight laning of the 8.4 km stretch from Ashram Chowk to Raj Ghat on Ring Road aimed at reducing travel time and providing enhanced connectivity to commuters from various parts of the Capital.

Describing Ring Road as the lifeline of Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said this was yet another step by her Government to make the entire Ring Road and Outer Ring Road signal-free to provide unhindered access to people and reduce traffic congestion. As a step in this direction, the widening of Ring Road from six to eight lanes was being executed in phases. The work on three phases has already been completed whereas that on the fourth phase from Wazirabad to Azadpur was in progress.

The fifth phase would cover Raj Ghat from Ashram Chowk, which would be widened within a year. The widening of the entire Ring Road would not only make traffic smooth but also save time and fuel apart from checking pollution. Around one-lakh vehicles pass through Ring Road during peak hours.

Ms. Dikshit said her Government was committed to commissioning all infrastructure development works being executed by the Public Works Department by the end of 2008 to ensure smooth hosting of Commonwealth Games 2010. Apart from flyovers, a number of foot over-bridges with escalators would also be commissioned to provide relief to pedestrians. She urged the people to render constructive cooperation in making Delhi a world-class city.

Preventing road cutting

Urban Development and PWD Minister A.K. Walia disclosed that ongoing widening of Ring Road would reduce frequent road cutting as separate corridor ducts on both sides of road are being provided for laying of lines of various utilities. This would also help in reducing maintenance and repair expenses. "PWD was geared up to meet the challenges of Games 2010 and would link Connaught Place with East Delhi and the Commonwealth Games Village at Akshardham with Jawaharlal Nehru stadium through a tunnel and a separate corridor."

Great pictures...

No doubt Delhi has best road infrastructure in India, Mumbai after that. Other metros are many years behind.

Overspeeding? There’s a digital eye on you

Overspeeding? There’s a digital eye on you

New Delhi, August 18: If you are in the habit of accelerating on roads when there are no traffic cops around, watch out. Automated Red Light and Speed Violation Check Camera System (RLSVCCS) is now promptly shooting off challans to those who cock a snook at traffic rules while driving.

The new system support prosecution claim with undeniable evidence in the form of photographs and even video recordings on demand. Buoyed by the system’s success, the traffic police has called for tenders for six new cameras to beef up their arsenal of the existing seven bought over the last two years.

“These cameras are already installed at seven locations in the Capital and we have called tenders for six more. These will be installed at isolated spots and accident-prone areas to help check traffic rule violations. This is a good system of unobtrusive policing,” said Qamar Ahmed, Joint Commissioner of Police(Traffic).

“We plan to increase the system’s coverage area to more locations gradually. By the time Commonwealth Games are held in Delhi, the system will be of immense assistance with enhanced coverage,” added the Joint CP.

The red light and speed check camera is connected with Piezo electric strips- pressure sensitive sensors embedded on road to gauge vehicle location and loop sensors to measure vehicle speed. These are, in turn, connected to the traffic signal. The cameras automatically detect violations of speed limits and traffic signals and store digital images of vehicles involved in the violations from different angles. This data is stored in computers which are able to produce documentary evidence of rule violations. Cameras fitted in the equipment record digitised images of the violation covering minimum three lanes with date, time, speed etc. It is basically used to check violations like red light jumping, speed violation, stop line violation. The system is also weather proof with temperature control facility.

Some 15 traffic personnel will also be trained to handle the system by the contractor who bags the bid. The sophisticated system, used extensively in developed countries, also comes at an impressive price tag. Each camera is said to cost around Rs 40 lakh. The traffic police keeps changing the location of the cameras as well through the year to ensure the ‘unobstrusive method of policing’ does not become predictable.

The other thing is that the footpath is more than a foot high. Most people will be avoiding the pain of climbing it.

Nod for Central Secretariat-Badarpur Metro

NEW DELHI: In a major fillip to the public transport sector in the Capital, the Delhi Cabinet on Monday gave its in-principle nod for the Central Secretariat-Badarpur Metro corridor that would pass through Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and would be complete by 2009. It also approved creation of a separate "Health Services" cadre under the Delhi Government.

These decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Ms. Dikshit disclosed that the Metro corridor from Central Secretariat to Badarpur via Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium also came up for discussion. The proposal has been given the green signal but the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been asked to answer certain queries raised by the Cabinet and the Government.

The new corridor would be completed by 2009, well before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

This would not only ease the traffic flow around congested areas but also provide state-of-the-art facilities for movement of spectators, media persons and other visitors to commute to different games venues easily. The 19.9 km corridor with 4.9 km underground and 15 km elevated section would have 14 stations. The Central Secretariat and Khan Market stations would be underground whereas JLN Stadium would be at ground level and 11 others would be elevated. The corridor would also provide direct and shortest possible route to important events area and business area of the Nehru Place and reduce journey time considerably.
