If the Naraina flyover is going to have dedicated bus bays, then presumably buses will use it, slow down, and pull off. Thankfully, the presence of dedicated bus lanes will help on this front somewhat, but if it's 6 lanes, and 2 on each side are to be dedicated bus lanes, that leaves only 1 lane in each direction for everyone else. This is not good, either they should make it 8 lanes or they should build the bus bays on the ground.

Twin bypasses to free up airport traffic in time for C’wealth Games

New Delhi, November 28: The PWD hopes to build two bypasses along the Mahipalpur-Mehrauli Road to provide commuters direct access to the airport in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A six-lane 3-km bypass will run from National Highway-8 behind Radisson Hotel joining up with the Mahipalpur road to help commuters avoid the congestion at Mahipalpur intersection. The second bypass will be a 700 metre one-way bypass ensuring signal-free access for traffic coming from Mehrauli and heading towards NH-8.

“This is a recently planned project and it will go a long way in decongesting the NH 8-Mahipalpur stretch. Travel time between the airport and south Delhi will reduce considerably with this project... as bottleneck areas like Mahipalpur village and Masoodpur area will be conveniently bypassed by traffic. It will be ready before the Games in 2010,” Engineer-in-Chief, PWD, R Subramanian said.

The project should be cleared by December-end and work is expected to start on it by mid-June 2007. The two bypasses are expected to cost around Rs 509 crore.

The bypass connecting NH-8 with the Mahipalpur-Mehrauli road will join up with a clover leaf interchange being planned by the DDA near Kapashera. Once the bypass is built, access to Dwarka from Mehrauli will become much quicker.

The bypasses are part of a larger PWD project to decongest access towards the airport. A set of flyovers is planned around the area and scheduled for completion by 2010. PWD will also construct flyovers at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg near Munirka on the Outer Ring road and at the Rao Tula Ram Marg-Benito Juarez Marg intersection. These flyovers are scheduled for completion by December 2008.

( Details ) Parallel Ring Road in east Delhi

The Delhi government on Friday gave its clearance for the construction of a parallel Ring Road across river Yamuna. This will become a signal free road in due course and connect Noida Road to Wazirabad Road through Mayur Vihar, Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar, Shastri Park and Seelampur.

The main feature of this east Delhi road would be an underground tunnel road. With a proposed length of 850 metres near the Shastri Park Metro Station, this would become the longest tunnel road in the city. The road passes through some of the most densely populated colonies of the city and traffic congestion is a routine feature.

Several stretches of the road along the banks of the river have already been completed but certain bottlenecks near the Old Railway Bridge on river Yamuna remained unsolved. The PWD finally decided to construct the 4-lane tunnel road with a cost of Rs 250 crore.

The tunnel would start at Mahavir Swami Park near Gandhi Nagar and cross the ISBT Road. The proposal to build a grade separator at Shastri Park has been amalgamated in the finalised design.

"We are sending the proposal to the DDA. It would be then sent to the DUAC for approval. We expect to begin the construction work by early next year," said PWD and Urban Development Minister AK Walia.

The other barrier to signal free traffic on the parallel Ring Road is the ITO chungi crossing. Walia said that the hurdles have been removed now for the construction of another tunnel at the crossing for a free flow of traffic. "As the Commonwealth Games village is located on this road, we would complete the project before the Games," said the minister.

The PWD has already decided to construct a flyover and an underpass at ITO, one of the busiest traffic junctions of the city. The latest report card of the Urban Development and the PWD says that 72 flyovers have been constructed in Delhi so far, 11 are under various stages of construction and proposal has been drawn for the construction of another 42 flyovers.

Nod for new Delhi flyover plan

Quote:
NEW DELHI: In an effort to decongest the Azadpur-Ring Road intersection, a gateway to the busy Delhi-Chandigarh national highway, the Delhi Government has cleared the decks for construction of a Rs.147-crore three-level modern grade separator aimed at making this major crossing signal- free in the next two years.

The project was given the green signal by the Expenditure Finance Committee headed by Delhi Finance Minister A.K. Walia, fulfilling a long-pending demand of local residents as well as various traders associations who had been pressing for such an infrastructure project to get rid of the consistent traffic jams in the area.

Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal played a major role in getting the project approved. The Public Works Department would execute the infrastructure project and work is likely to start by this year-end.

The project has been designed in such a manner that it would pass through the Metro railway route on the Delhi University-Jehangirpuri section.

Dr. Walia informed that the new three-level modern state-of-the-art grade separator would be constructed at the Azadpur intersection to make it signal-free. The PWD would complete this project within 30 months at an estimated cost of Rs. 147.72 crores. It would have the grade separator joining Ring Road and Road No.51, an underpass on G.T. Karnal Road, Mall Road and Mall Road Extension, rotary at ground level for right turns, pedestrian subway for movement of bus commuters, bicycle track, railing and footpath.

The project would also have proper rainwater harvesting infrastructure apart from beautiful landscaping.

Dr. Walia said the Azadpur intersection was one of the busiest junctions in the Capital catering to heavy traffic from various directions including Mukarba Chowk-NH-1, Ring Road from Shalimar Bagh and Pitampura on Mall Road from Model Town. The traffic is further multiplied due to the presence of the wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Azadpur as thousands of vehicles unload and load for various destinations carrying vegetables and fruits everyday.

The Ring Road also caters to a very large volume of traffic from Pitampura, Rohini and connects the North-West District passing from this junction.

It also caters to a large residential area adjoining Mall Road Extension, Mall Road and other urban colonies.

It also connects newly constructed Road No.51, which joins the junction to Outer Ring Road at Mukundpur crossing. After the construction of the new grade separator, Road No. 51 would become part of Ring Road. The grade separator will also facilitate better road communication for decongestion of Delhi roads in view of the upcoming Commonwealth Games-2010.

Six-lane flyover to ease traffic at ITO crossing

Quote:
NEW DELHI: Delhi Finance and Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia on Friday announced that the Public Works Department was actively working on a proposal relating to construction of a six-lane flyover and an underground corridor at the ITO-Bahadhur Shah Zafar Marg crossing in the heart of the Capital.

The two proposed infrastructure projects would substantially help in providing smooth flow of traffic and make the two intersections at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and ITO signal-free before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

A 620-metre-long six-lane flyover along Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg is proposed to facilitate straight traffic from Tilak Marg to Delhi Gate and vice versa.

A right turn from Tilak Marg to Indraprastha Marg would be allowed only at the surface level signal. Straight traffic along Deen Dayal Upadhaya Marg-Indrapratha Marg-Vikas Marg would pass through a six-lane underground corridor.

This corridor would cross Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Ring Road as a continuous underground corridor and would ramp up towards IP barrage after crossing Ring Road.

There would be ramps connecting the underground corridor to IP Marg near Vikas Bhavan. A right turning loop will also be constructed to allow the traffic from Vikas Marg to Ring Road to avoid the signal at ITO.

The Minister said the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg-Indrapratha Marg intersection at the formation of the A-point would become signal-free. The ITO intersection will also become signal-free as a right turn from Ring Road-Indraprastha Depot side to Vikas Marg side will facilitate a U-turn near Yamuna Velodrome Road allowing a left turn at the Indraprastha flyover to reach Vikas Marg.

Dr. Walia said that the entire area would have a conflict-free pedestrian corridor. The bus stop near the School of Planning and Architecture would be shifted under the Indraprastha flyover and connected with a continuous pedestrian way.

The plan would also integrate with the High Capacity Bus System passing through the area.
