The worlds longest tunnel, glaciers, Norwegian fjords and mountains!

The worlds longest tunnel, glaciers, Norwegian fjords and mountains!

Its not many days ago i was on a 2 day long vacation to Molde and visited some nice mountains and fjords in Geiranger and Åndalsnes (you can view this thread here). Now, the last week end, one week after the last vacation i was on another trip to the south. This time i also visited Trollstigen (the troll road) and Ørneveien (the eagles road) on my way to Geirangerfjorden (maybe the most famous fjord in the world). But i went further south to the towns of Stryn and Sogndal and saw the largest glacier on European mainland, Jostedalsbreen. After paying 160 Nok to a toll station after a tunnel under the glacier i went to Lærdal, through the world longest roadtunnel, Lærdalstunnellen (24 530m long) and to Flåm, then back again and over Fillefjell and Valdresflya mountains.

Gallery 3: Lærdalstunnelen, Kongsveien, Borgund and Valdres

Driving through the world longest tunnel, Lærdalstunnellen which is 24 530m long. Inside you can find three big halls with different lightnings. Its really spectacular, and as you enter these halls it feels like the whole mountain just open, or as you were inside a glacier!

Flåm panorama

A little image from Flåm, a really beautiful place, all i was missing was good weather!

Going up Kongsveien (kings road), which is a really nice landmark. You can drive after the old road and see the reminding parts and ruines of the old kings road going up Lærdalen. This is just the path going close to the road, a spectacular walk as well!

Borgund stavechurch.

A little preview of Beitosdølen.

A little preview from Valdresflya.

Very good photos and i love the nature.

Is that a original stave church from middle ages or a rebuild?

Nice work! It's under a month since I drove through Lærdalstunnellen, a very special exerience, it feels like you just drive and drive forever into the mountain. I was planning on posting a thread soon of the photos I took while driving from Filefjell to Bergen, but I've been sort of busy. Your pictures of the tunnel is better anyway, since you actually went out of your car to take photos in there!

btw, nice to see Valdresflya, not long since I was there either

Beautiful pictures! I drove through Lærdalstunnellen too this summer. It really took forever to drive through! It was my first time in that part of Sogn og Fjordane. I was surprised to see that Lærdal had a small "old town" area. Really nice old houses.

Gorgerous set of photos. Norwegian naturescapes are so breathtaking, eventhough I know that no camera can convey the whole truth.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...ma2small-1.jpg - Building good infrastructure to Norway sure has been a nightmare to engineers...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...N4604small.jpg - May I ask, how old is that church?

It's built in 1180, and one of the best preserved stavechurches in Norway(or the world for that matter)

Investigations show that the wood used to built it was cut down in 1180-81. Some parts of the interior is aparently from 16'th and 17'th century

I am actually a member of Fortidsminneforeningen. The Borgund stave church is unique because it is so well preserved. Other churches, such as Hopperstad in Vik, were heavily renovated (almost completly rebuilt) in the 1880s and 1890s.

Yes, as Northstar say, the church is from around 1180, there has just been some interiour reconstruction, but they have been minor. So they have done a really great work to keep it alive, as most wood rotten really fast.

@ Northstar: Yeah, Lærdalstunnelen was quite an experience to be a tunnel! You should have stopped inside it, it was quite amazing, because the sound of cars and busses was really loud, and somehow odd, especially because the tunnel was so long!

@ siddis: Yes, Lærdal has a really nice old town district. I was not able to see it all as i just drove by it looking for a fuel station. And the weather was not that good, as it was clouded and early in the morning.

@ eomer: No, i didn't take the train. I drove all the way from Leksvik, spent the night sleeping in my car somewhere in a forest close to Sogndal! The whole drive was on 1 444.3 km, and the trip last week (this thread) was in 1 050.1 km, so i've been driving a bit lately!

Thanks all for viewing this thread and leaving a reply, and remember to do so in the first mountains and fjord trip thread here!

Nice, such a shame i didn't stop by any of the other stave churches i passed by (Øye Stavkirke, Kaupanger Stavkirke, Lomen Stavkirke and Vågå Stavkirke). Stopped by Vågå last time/ last week though!
