To be fair, all the prestigious Skyscrapers in Leeds were cancelled too - Lumiere (on hold), Criterion, Mayfair, Greenbank, Spiricle.

Well yes, but Clarence House, Bridgewater Place, Broadcasting Tower and Candle House have been built. It just so happens that Sky Plaza and Opal 3 stand out more from most angles due to their location.

I guess it is also worth mentioning that all of the buildings now complete in Leeds City Centre were proposed before the recession started as the recession has certainly put the brakes on any large scale development in Leeds for now as was also the case in other major cities such as Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham etc.

Nothing is definate anywhere in the country ... all I can say is this...

.... has just been passed by Birmingham City Council's Planning Department ... and at 200.5 metres tall, will be the tallest building outside of London's Canary Wharf

image hosted on flickr

... another couple at advanced stages of development at 136 metres and 107 metres respectively ... enjoy

Woop-de-doo, they have planning permission. Means nothing, they're years off development.

Agree with you ... nothing is certain in the current climate .... things that get past planning is all we can go by at the moment. Even then, buildings can start being built and it can still go pear shaped, like with Lumiere and the Snow Hill apartment and hotel towers. The developers of the Cube, even that went 'belly up' towards the end of it's construction, and it is now Lloyds funding the final completion phase. I was just asked what "Birmingham is coming up with" ... and I answered the question

I'm no expert, but it appears that the conversation has strayed off-topic.

Those Birmingham towers all look decent though, they'd be welcome in most large UK cities.

the sad reality is, most high rise buildings in the provincial cites, particularly birmingham, look better in the dark

Best photo of birmingham's talls ...

No, they're past the drawing board stage... Not much past, but...

Oh, darn it, I had the camera on 'economy' hence the smallness and low quality of the pic

No ... they're still very much 'drawings' ... or computer images at least!

Isn't Mr Wiggs confrontational.... must have been on the Sherry last night!

Birmingham has some great looking 'modern' buildings that shine both day & night ... even Edgbaston Leeds' 'twin' looks pretty good!

I know, I know!!!!!

A few of my pictures from being out and about. Taken on my iPhone 4, which is surprisingly good at taking snaps.

Whilst collecting temperature, dew point and relative humidity data for my Urban Heat Island dissertation last night around Leeds (I was driving around doing 30mph for 80 miles! Tiring stuff but the raw data seems to look like it went well!)

Anyway I noticed that Sky Plaza's red aircraft warning light now blinks/flashes on and off instead of remaining constant. Any reason why they've changed this?

I'm pretty sure it's always been like that...
