This tower is gorgeous, Liverpool's skyline will be really quite impressive by 2008, possibly the 2nd best in the UK after London.

City to boast Britain’s highest restaurantJan 6 2007

EXCLUSIVE by Larry Neild

BRITAIN’S highest restaurant is to be created in Liverpool, offering diners stunning views of the city.

Local developers the Beetham Organisation want to open the exclusive bar and restaurant almost 400ft above street level on the 34th floor of their West Tower development currently under way in Brook Street.

It will be operated as part of the nearby SAS Radisson Hotel which formed part of Beetham’s first scheme in Old Hall Street.

Last night, Liverpool City Council’s executive member for special initiatives, Cllr Mike Storey, welcomed the project.

He said: “This will be an excellent scheme for Liverpool and will provide what must be some of the most stunning views of our city. The fact that it will open at the start of our Capital of Culture Year is icing on the cake.

“It will have to go through the planning process, but if there are no problems with the scheme then I look forward to it proceeding.”

Last night Beetham Organ- isation managing director Stephen Beetham said: “We are excited about the prospect of creating a restaurant in our new tower. We believe it will be the highest restaurant on any building in the country and will be higher than the resolving restaurant that used to operate in the 1960s at what is now the Radio City Tower.”

Mr Beetham said the idea was prompted by the success of the 23rd-storey restaurant at the new Hilton Hotel in the Beetham Tower in Manchester’s Deansgate.

That restaurant is often fully booked months in advance.

The proposed Liverpool Sky Restaurant will be sandwiched between apartments and the upper floor penthouses in the 40-storey building.

Edward Landor from agents Edmund Kirby said: “We have acted as planning agents for Beetham on the scheme. It is a really impressive proposal and we believe a restaurant at this location will be very popular in what is an increasingly busy commercial district of the city. It will provide impressive views and will be popular as a venue for hosting business events. It will be also open to hotel guests at the SAS Radisson and the general public will be able to make advance reservations.”

The exclusive restaurant , the tallest in the UK open to the public, will accommodate just 60 diners at tables alongside floor to ceiling glazed walls, giving uninterrupted views of a wide area.

Mr Landor said discussions had already taken place with planning officers about the scheme.

He said: “As this is an application to change a use in a building that already has planning consent, it will be dealt with by officers under delegated powers.”

Lower floors of the building will be used as offices, with around 140 apartments.

Surely 'Vertigo' in Tower 42 is higher?

Vertigo is on floor 42 of tower 42.

So surely it's higher than beethams resturant.

I thought Vertigo 42 was on the top habitable floor and thus around 150-160m up? Thats taller than the West Tower anyway!

What's with this random streaky 1960s cladding the Beetham towers have? It's repulsive.

I've been thinking that. I reckon that beetham want it's buildings to all have a "beetham" identity in the form of this cladding style.

I completely agree, the cladding on all their towers already looks dated, I wouldn't be suprised if they're all reclad in a matter of years.

The highest restaurant open to the public it means. The tower 42 one is private as is the one up the gherkin.

Think how small the beetham west footprint is though, might be a bit small and possibly cramped up there. Amazing views though.
