Yes, in Deccan chornicle - Chennai edition it was published...please see my threads above and the also reply given by lonely planet editor when I wrote my concerns...I think some serious steps has to be taken.

I have given the email ID of the man who is the editor of Lonely planet...so we SSCians need to send some agitated mails ....

Your 9 most hated cities

Detroit, USA - Crime, pollution and crumbling infrastructure don’t appeal to you.
Accra, Ghana - Ugly, chaotic, sprawling and completely indifferent to its waterfront location.
Seoul, South Korea - According to one comment, ‘It’s an appallingly repetitive sprawl of freeways and Soviet-style concrete apartment buildings, horribly polluted, with no heart or spirit to it. So oppressively bland that the populace is driven to alcoholism.’
Los Angeles, USA - A highly contentious pick, placed here because of its ‘uncontrolled sprawl, pollution, appalling traffic and ugly freeways.’
Wolverhampton, England - So bad that we don’t even have it on this site! Check out post 35 on this thread.
San Salvador, El Salvador - Widely acknowledged as the grubbiest of the Central American capitals.
Chennai, India - We describe it as lacking Mumbai’s prosperity, Delhi’s history or Bengaluru’s buzz. Even the movie stars are ‘not that hot.’ You think we’re being generous.
Arusha, Tanzania - A gateway to natural wonder that has more than its share of rust. Get out as quickly as you can.
Chetumal, Mexico - Combining the worst of mass tourism and outlying decay, Chetumal just doesn’t charm you.

Yes, I know your comments. That guy from Lonely planet needs to change that write-up NOW. I'm from Bombay and I know that I would be mad if only the slums, crowd, terrorism are being pointed at. That man clearly is ignorant and naive. He has surely gone by the 'Hate Chennai' blogs. Let's post in MK Stalin's website and wait for a response. Chennai desperately needs to be vigorously marketed positively before it gets too late. Man, what a loser author!!

Probably also convey through some medium to Mayor Subramaniam and Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni. Appears to be like these guys are sweating out, trying to give the city a clean and green brand image.

I, for one, never expected such tarnishing BS bout chennai to be up on a reputed travel guide. That editors' response, doesn't give a good vibe either. It sounds like, this is your pathetic city and we tried to do justice by writing up some nice things at the bottom. One can clearly sense some unwanted element having played a part here. . Lets get this corrected asap.

Yes, I am going to do this tommorrow...post this in Stalin's website and also send emails to Mayor and commissioner. If there are some influential person in this thread than they can take up the matter straight to concerned authorities.....

Every city has its own bad and good sides, I will not say exaggerated statements like Chennai is heaven on earth / Best city in the world to live etc(even I wont accept if some one says that) but at the same time none of the Indian cities are fit to be called as best city to live in...why then Chennai is only being tarnished and bashed everywhere, ..when it has all the contents required for a good decent living.

Even better, would be to get in touch with Secretary of TamilNadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), Dr. V. Irai Anbu IAS, the man behind Miniature Tamil Nadu. An elite and eloquent professional; he might readily understand this cheap belittling efforts and make some serious moves as this affects his most dear projects.

Raji7373: While you send a mail, please add a CC to this email address also ttdc@vsnl.com. it maybe worth the try .

The reasons given for hating Chennai are ridiculous to say the least. When you travel to Chennai, who do you look for Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru? Chennai is Chennai and you can't see other cities in it.

Can one not say that one cannot see the skyline of Newyork in Mumbai or wide roads/avenues of Paris in Bengaluru, etc.?

The author of that piece of (sh*t) article must be out of his mind or it was full of filth.

some of the main reasons for people hating Chennai

1) Heat
2) Dust & Sand (They have dust and sand as well from the city they come from, but they'd blame us the most)
3) lack of attractive women (as if in other cities if they see a good looking woman they can take them to bed or something!!)
4) Dress sense of Chennaiites (dirty Dhothi and Sarees are the things they keep in mind usually)
5) Lack of hindi
6) humidity
7) lack of pubs cum dance bars and night life
8) lack of availability of narcotics (its very essential to some, you see )
9) is costly in Tasmac!
10) Autowalas cheat their wealth away (atleast how much of exaggeration they put)

These are the popular myths and urban legends shared about Chennai by most people especially the evil Bangaloreans (lol). But it is all balls to them for they cannot expect most of these things in other cities as well.

ha ha ha .....nice

"Autowalas cheat their wealth away (atleast how much of exaggeration they put)"

only this one is genuine ....all others are not valid reasons for hating a city......though some people may hate chennai based on these also.

Chennai no way lacks nightlife anymore. Check out http://chennai.burrp.com. Chennai is one of the most happening places right now and growing rapidly.

Off that list, fixing just lack of Hindi and autowallahs will do wonders for the city. I strongly believe that they are the only 2 problems plaguing Chennai that's virtually absent elsewhere.

P.S: Please stop propagating that Chennai lacks night life. You are worsening
the situation.

Thanx

Thanks Neosphere, started doing the needful.

Sand, Heat and dust : it is everywhere in India.
Delhi, gurgoan the worst.
I have seen places in Gurgaon covered with dust, you can literally see smoky dust in air, like dust strom has ravaged the city. One of my collegue was staying in an aprartment in the same area and he said that doors and windows of his house are always closed becuase of the dust.
In Delhi you can see all the trees brown in colour (not green) covered with dust, reason thay say is dust from coal power station, just an example for dust and sand exist more than Chennai in other cities ...

Bangalore - other than climate nothing I find amazing....too polluted. Mumbai suburban stations -can't tolerate man. Central, western and harbour lines...Oops. If you have car in Mumbai no use, you can't drive.

I don't want to pin point things anyway as the list is endless, if I do so .....,

Sarees....that is traditional dress of India man!!! But now things have changed yaar...girls find Jeans and cotton kurties more comfortable.

Night Life: Not dull anymore dude, if you want to enjoy -investigate, Don't blame the city. Apart from Pubs (though we have) there are several resorts and farm houses which cater to your needs. Many people prefer farm houses, which are let out for parties and get together, more safer and private than pubs.

i am fed up of elaborating everypoint.....no use, perceptions and stubborn misguided minds cannot be changed...

I personally won't comment on night life in Chennai since I don't know anything about it.

I don't think the lack of Hindi is a problem, it just is what it is - you can't expect the whole country to speak it, if people expect us to in Madras, they're mistaken. Even if this is a pressing concern, I don't think there's a way to fix it within a generation.

Autokaras, however, there's something that needs immediate reigning. One suggestion that I have is to file an RTI petition to see which politicians/politicians' families own autos and publicise the list and then ask for legislation to prevent those in office from owning autos, to reduce the influence of these beasts.

Whoa! neosphere, you have gone beyond the beyond and out of stratosphere and ionosphere. What I said was their assumption. I did not say Chennai lacks night life. Unlike Bangalore where night life is located in a central place in just two roads - Brigade road and MG Road, Chennai has night life in so many different places and is hard to locate them as they are dispersed everywhere. We had the first pub in the whole of India for that matter and I am aware of these things mister.

This is actually not true. I can't find the article now, but a few years ago, The Hindu reported that Chennai was a major distribution centre for heroin and other recreational drugs and that ketamine usage was on the increase. I was surprised, but I imagine the stuff comes into the port from South-East Asia and is then distributed over land to other parts of the country.

Thumbs up Chennai - 9th Least Expensive city in the World!!!

Quote:
Mercer's Cost of Living survey covers 143 cities across six continents and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in each location, including housing, transport, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment. It is the world’s most comprehensive cost of living survey and is used to help multinational companies and governments determine compensation allowance for their expatriate employees.

The period from March 2008 to March 2009 has been characterised by an unprecedented economic downturn. The global economic crisis has had a direct impact on the Cost of Living indices in the various locations covered by Mercer, and hence on the resulting Cost of Living rankings.

In Mercer’s survey, New York is used as the base city for the index and scores 100 points, all cities are compared against New York and currency movements are measured against the US dollar. Tokyo scores 143.7 points and is nearly three times as costly as Johannesburg with an index score of 49.6.
Chennai is standing at 135th rank with a index score of 57.7

Source: http://www.mercer.com/costofliving

Even though we might have a lot to do in terms of effective sanitation and multi-modal transport, still we've managed to create a much livable condition for all classes of people.
