Wall posters have started defacing city roads again as the city corporation continues to turn a blind eye to them.

The arterial Anna Salai and EVR Periyar Salai, which were declared poster-free zones by the previous corporation council, are now plastered with wall posters on either side.

The stretch from Teynampet to Guindy and many city subways and flyovers have also become favourites with political parties seeking publicity through posters.

They have not spared even the steel fences erected by the Chennai Metro Rail to cordon-off its work sites. Movie posters too have begun appearing in the city like in the past, distracting commuters and dirtying walls.

Former mayor M. Subramanian blames the present corporation council for letting things slide on the poster front.

Recalling that the previous council had decided to paint public walls along the arterial roads to keep the posters at bay, he regrets that the present council has allowed posters to mar even the painted walls and is whitewashing some of them now.

“The corporation does not have to pass another resolution to curb this menace as the TN Figurement Act is enough to tackle it,” he says.

When contacted, senior corporation officials assured appropriate action would be taken on the resolution adopted by the civic council in November last year on regulating wall posters and hoardings in the city.

Activists protesting against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant today said their People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) has collected over Rs 25 lakh locally to fuel their agitation and denied receiving any foreign funds.

"Between August 14 last year and February 28, we have collected Rs 25,17,991 and spent Rs 17,64,238," Stanly, one of their 30-member finance committee of PMANE, told PTI.

Denying any foreign funds in the protests, he said, "We have used only this money collected from locals, fishermen and beedi rolling women."

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram had stated in Delhi yesterday that cases have been filed against four NGOs after it was found prima facie that they were involved in diversion of foreign funds from the purpose for which they were received.

He said the CBI has been asked to register cases against four of the two NGOs while the other two have been left to Tamil Nadu Police.

Stanly said every households in the area donated Rs 200 each, while fishermen in that vicinity donated 10 per cent of the total earnings from their catch.

Meanwhile, the protests against the controversial Indo-Russian nuclear project will enter the 200th day tomorrow.

"Our people are relying only on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister... We are returning with high hopes," S P Udayakumar, spearheading the protests had said after meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa yesterday.

Jayalalithaa is yet to take a decision on the issue after the four-member state committee submitted its report on February 28.

Even God cannot allay their so called fears if they are bent upon closing the plant and not listening to wiser council.Udaykumar welcomes both central and state committee of experts and when they give a positive report about the safety of the plant he becomes hostile.If these fellows intentions are to close the plant then why send the committee of experts in the first place.The state Govt allowed this movement to become uncontrollable and these unknown so called leaders of the anti nuke agitation like udaykumar have become bold to criticise the P.M, Sonia Gandhi and karunanidhi.

An increasing shift to Japanese foods and dietary patterns could help address a wide range of health issues. This was the focus of a recent seminar on Japanese food products held in the city. The seminar, which also featured a business networking meet for Indian and Japanese businesses in the food sector, was aimed at boosting trade in food products between the two countries.

Organised by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) just days after the prestigious India International Seafood Expo, the seminar underscored the potential for increased Indo-Japan food trade against the backdrop of the 60th year celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two Asian majors.

“Japanese presence in India is on the rise. This is especially true of Tamil Nadu. Of the 812 Japanese companies in India, a majority are in this State. JETRO has opened an office in Chennai especially to address the vast number of queries from the region,” noted JETRO director general Shinya Fujii.

Leena Nair, Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) of the Government of India, expressed her condolences to those who had lost their lives in the great East Japan Earthquake and resultant tsunami and noted that India was looking forward to increase trade with Japan’s seafood industry, which had largely taken a massive hit.

Takayuki Kitagawa, Acting Consul-General of the Japanese Consulate in Chennai, reflected Nair’s views. He outlined the history of the global Japanese food boom. “Fact is, the Japanese food boom did not come out of Japan. It came out of the US around 30 years back. Japanese foods and dietary practices were healthy as it is, but especially against American food habits then. The US government was given studies that suggested a shift to Japanese foods,” he noted.

“That helped the US cut its budgetary deficit as it helped slash health problems and in turn cutting the national health bill. I suggest this can be taken up here as well, to help Tamil Nadu slash its budgetary deficit. Indian foods are healthy overall, but they are oily. Japanese foods can address that,” he said.

The seminar also featured three stalls – two vegetarian and one sushi – for the Indian businessmen to sample Japanese food products.

Usual political BS talk. Both sides are not interested in solving this problem/putting end to poster menace. Previous corporation did some namesake prevention but even then ruling party posters along were seen. Now of course both party posters are liberally pasted.

I must say that some of the posters are very creative too. Esp the poster greeting MK Stalin's bday (facebook, one Sun, One commander ) !! Super Creative people !!

Smart grid project to come up in Puducherry

[QUOTE]India's first smart grid project recommended by the Power Ministry's India Smart Grid Task force will come up on a pilot basis in the union territory, an official release said today.

The project involves an investment of Rs 77 crore, of which Rs 25 crore would be borne by the Ministry and the balance by the State Government concerned, it said.

A Memorandum of Understanding to introduce the innovative project here signed in the presence of the Chief Minister, Mr N. Rangasamy, here today between the Department of Electricity and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL). In Puducherry, the entire share of Rs 52 crore would be borne by PGCIL, a collaborator in the implementation of the project here. The Ministry proposed to set up such smart grid projects in eight cities across India and that Puducherry is the first to implement it on an experimental basis, the official statement said.

The main highlights of the project are installation of 'advance metering infrastructure with a Central Data Control unit, which would help consumers and the department. [/QUOTE]
