It is all about planning by people who have 360 Degree vision. Take our Chennai Metro under construction. We should ensure that every metro station is next to a bus stop. And we should also ensure that some minimal paid parking is available for the key metros. But has it been thought about? I am not sure about first but for second, it seems Metro has completely ignored parking requirement to save on LA. Penny wise, Pound foolish

Visa norms a bitter pill to medical tourism

Quote:
CHENNAI: Some 40 policemen landed up at the Apollo Hospitals on Greams Road recently to check whether their 100-odd foreign patients undergoing treatment at the hospital had valid visas. While some patients were uncomfortable and embarrassed, the hospital management was upset.

On Tuesday, hospital chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy, who is also the CII chairman of the public health council, said India has been receiving patients from across the. "But despite our capabilities, we have not been able to be on the top because of inadequate support from the government," he told reporters. Since the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, the cost of medical visa has gone up by three times for citizens of some countries, he said. The processing procedures have also become cumbersome and tedious. Also, policemen visit the hospital to check on the patients and their attenders.

"If you ask me why, I have no answers," said Dr Reddy. "We have made several representations to the external affairs ministry and the Union health ministry. Sometimes, even if we think the patient may not be fit to travel, we discharge them because the visa process for extension is complicated."

Countries like the UK and the US have supported medical tourism for several decades now. However, in many Asian countries like Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and India, the concept is new and rapidly growing. Market estimates value medical tourism in India at US$ 40 billion with annual growth of 20%. CII estimates that 1,50,000 medical tourists came to India in 2005, based on feedback from the organization's member hospitals. The number grew to 2,00,000 (33%) by 2008. Experts expect that by 2015, India will receive more than half a million medical tourists annually.

Chennai-based MIOT Hospitals managing director Mallika Mohandoss said their hospitals had lost patients from several countries because of the delays in visa processing. "People choose India because the cost of treatment and stay are cheap. In countries like Thailand, medical visas are issued in 24 hours. Some patients seeking treatment in India are made to wait for weeks," she said.

But some doctor's like Delhi-based Dr Naresh Trehan, who heads the Medanta Hospitals, said they did not mind the delay or police checks on patients. "We send requests to embassies requesting them to expedite the application process. I believe security cannot be compromised," he said.

World class streets in Chennai to be a reality?

There is not a soul in the city who does not curse his or her fate when using the city roads. If the bumpy rides on the pothole-filled city roads are not enough, the huge pile up of vehicles due to poor regulation at the junctions and poor planning of roads and pavements add to their woes. But now, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The new design of the roads and streets in the city has been envisioned by Chennai City Connect, an infrastructure platform for urban development involving the city’s stakeholders, pledge to provide better usage of road space through better planning and design. This they have done without compromising the ‘Indian sensibilities’, claim the architects.

Roads of a particular city are the indicators of how a society takes care of its people, says Kavitha Selvaraj, Director, CR Narayana Rao LLP. In India, they can at best be termed dismal. While examples of good road design are abound in Europe and even Singapore, all designs cannot be simply adapted to the Indian conditions. “While designing the roads, we believe that the thrust should be on safety, mobility, pedestrian accessibility, liveability, sensitivity to the local context and creative use of street space,” Kavitha explains. The design prototype developed by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) and Chennai City Connect, lays stress on promoting public transport, exclusive bicycle lanes, pedestrian walkways, carriageway for private vehicles, slots along the walkway for street vendors, space for public gathering and slots for parking. For narrow roads, the entire width of the road should be designed as a slow zone while on wider streets, a separate slow zone should be defined.

While a major thrust should be laid on providing footpaths on all major roads, the pedestrian space should be marked with at least two metres of continues space for walking. "While cities like Chennai are investing in high quality public transport system, including Metro Rail and Bus Rapid Transit System, little attention has been paid on how passengers would access the transit stations," lamented Kavitha. At the moment, City Connect is involved in building capacity among the Corporation engineers. The 60 roads that have been selected would first be redesigned by the engineers as per the prototype and a critical analysis would be done before the designed are okayed for execution, says Kavitha.

India Inc. optimistic on 2012 hiring

The organized sector in India is set to create about 1.6 million new jobs in the year 2012, reveals the latest results of Ma Foi Randstad Employment Trends Survey (MEtS), the largest study on the Indian employment trends and opportunities.

According to MEtS, which surveyed 639 companies across 13 industry sectors in eight major Indian cities, most employers are optimistic about their hiring plans for the current year as all sectors indicate positive growth outlook during the next twelve months.

The sectors that are most optimistic about hiring in the year 2012 are, Healthcare, Hospitality IT/ITES, Non-machinery Manufacturing and Media & entertainment. In terms of number of jobs expected to be created, Healthcare, Hospitality and IT/ITES are looking forward to add more than 2 lakh jobs, whereas Manufacturing (non-machinery products), Media & entertainment and Real estate & construction sectors are expecting 1 lakh plus additions in each sector.

The top three job generation sectors estimated by the survey for this year are Healthcare (273,571), Hospitality (230,213) and IT/ITES (227,328).

In the calendar year 2011, around 1.4 million jobs were generated across the 13 sectors.

This is lesser than the 1.6 million job generation predicted at the beginning of 2011. However, data for the last quarter of CY 2011 shows that 0.36 million jobs were generated as against an expectation of 0.33 million, indicating positive growth towards the end of the year.

Healthcare, Hospitality and IT/ITES were the major job creators in the last quarter, with Media and Entertainment also doing particularly well.

Non-machinery and Manufacturing (-68,626), Transport Storage & Communication (-45,450) and BFSI (-20,605) were some of the sectors that underperformed during 2011.

Among the 8 cities surveyed, the top three job generators in 2011 were Delhi (110,900) Mumbai (109,600) and Chennai (62,200) while Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad were the lowest with 15700, 12,900 and 7,100 jobs respectively. Looking ahead Mumbai (39,100) Delhi & NCR (34,200) and Chennai (19,100) are expected to remain top hiring cities for the first quarter of Q1 2012.

The city is the canvas

The second edition of Art Chennai is here. And it's gotten bigger and better

Art Chennai, the citywide art extravaganza is back, and this time, it's heading out for the wide open spaces.

Unlike its inaugural edition, which was confined to the city's art galleries and five star hotels, this year's nine-day celebration of art — painting, sculpture, installation, photography and more — will be spread out across beaches, malls, IT parks, restaurants and MRTS stations in Chennai.

“We thought, why not take art to more people this year?” says Sanjay Tulsyan, convenor of Art Chennai. “The idea is to introduce art into different atmospheres so that more people connect with it, and art doesn't seem as intimidating anymore.”

So, from March 10 to 14, there will be a vast, eco-friendly project along a one-km stretch of the Marina beach, where five artists from different parts of India will create art out of environmentally friendly materials, interactive art that changes with the wind and the tide. Artworks will also be on display at popular city locations such as Burgundy, Amethyst and Spaces. And then there will be massive art installations — celebrated pieces that come to Chennai after travelling to art fairs and festivals across the world — at Express Avenue Mall and Ascendas, in addition to those at Lalit Kala Akademi and Taj Coromandel.

“We want to make people and corporations realise the importance of public art spaces,” says Tulsyan. “Our cities and infrastructures are growing; why isn't public art?”

The second edition of the festival is also attempting to be more inclusive in other ways. For instance, a photography contest (the subject was Chennai) was conducted for the public in association with Goethe Institut and Travelling Lens, and the 100 winning entries are to be blown up and displayed at a handful of MRTS stations across the city from March 14.

Art students from Chennai colleges have been roped in as apprentices, and selected works of high school and college students will be on view at galleries through the student connect programme.

Of course, all the core events from the first edition remain. The art seminar from last year has grown into a full-fledged conference that will take place at Taj Coromandel on March 16 and 17, with high-profile national and international curators, collectors and artists participating. The ‘Boutique Art Fair', an exhibition by visiting galleries, will be on at Taj Coromandel on March 17, featuring works from seven Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Cochin galleries.

‘Art Residency', one of the highlights of the festival, will feature 25 top artists in Taj Coromandel, Vivanta by Taj — Connemara and Taj Club House, creating their works live. And, as with last year, all of the city's galleries will present a diverse range of solo and group shows exhibiting the works — over 2,000 in all — of artists from Chennai and across the country. It all ends with the grand auction of art works on March 18.

But it isn't only about fine art. This year, Art Chennai is also experimenting with a few pieces of performance art, ranging from a comedy show featuring Cyrus Broacha and Vikram Sathaye to a yoga-based art performance by C. Krishnaswami, a dance performance by the Navarasa Dance theatre and a concert by Pakistani pop duo Strings.

“Visual art is the backbone of Art Chennai, but art can be interpreted in a lot of different ways,” says Tulsyan. “We're trying out some small performance-based events this year to see how people react. Next year we hope to include literature and folk art as well — then we will be a complete art festival.”
