there are people who don't care for either the formal or popular dress codes. the young hippie western folks, esp. in US, often have scant regards ..... they, infact, specialize in making the heads turn .. in a good or bad way. personally, due some reason me thinks our desi kurtha style is unsightly, but am sucker for veshti, thundu anytime any day .. suits, never suits our weather. in a nutshell, guess it is different strokes for diffn. folks

Chennai: Focus on improving transport corridor

Quote:
The Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study has a major focus on improvement of the entire transportation corridor rather than the piecemeal approach that the government agencies have had over the years.

The transportation corridor as a whole will be improved instead of taking up improvements at isolated locations along the corridor. For example, the Highways Department, Chennai Corporation and other local bodies should ensure that the pavements are not less them 1.5 metres in width in residential areas and three metres along major roads, which will permit commercial activities as well.

There should be concerted efforts, said the recommendations made to the government, to evolve a uniform code that focuses on design elements of roads and specifics such as pavements, ducting of utilities, gradient, camber, drainage, activities along the curbs and segregation of traffic as per mode.

A safety audit, the report said, should be an integral part of transport-related planning and development. For road surface improvement, the use of cold milling machines to scrape the top surface before relaying the entire road network was a suggestion made in the plan.

To integrate the entire transport network of the city, the report has said that bus stop locations, pedestrian subways and foot overbridges should be integrated as far as possible with the nearby suburban rail, Metro Rail or MRTS corridor.

To this effect, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has announced its decision to launch a densification study along the Chennai Metro Rail corridor to assess the span of influence of the Metro Rail
The authorities plan to support Metro Rail by inducing development along the corridor.

Sources said that the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL), the nodal agency, has invited proposals from consultants to carry out the study for the CMDA. The CMDA plans to review the Master Plan for Chennai Metropolitan Area, as well as the Comprehensive Transportation Plan.

CCTS approved as Chennai Transportation Plan

Quote:
The state government has urged various departments and implementing agencies to prepare their respective annual plans based on the recommendations of the Chennai Comprehensive Transportation Study (CCTS), according to Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) sources. Sources said this was discussed during a recent meeting attended by the Department of Highways, traffic police, Chennai Corporation, Transport Department, metro rail and local bodies.

Sources said the Highways Department, which has the third highest share of 16.8 per cent in the Rs 82,120-crore investment proposal in three phases from 2010, has already started implementing a few of the projects recommended by the study.

The report, initiated by the CMDA, is before the government and plans are being worked out to seek funds from the Asian Development Bank and World Bank to fund the projects, sources said. The first phase of the CCTS (2010-15) requires an investment of Rs 52,689 crore.

There are plans for a Comprehensive Transportation Plan to address the planning and development of all the public mass passenger transport modes and related infrastructure within the Master Plan in consultation with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and recommend implementation of the same through the respective transport agencies.

Some of the major recommendations of the CCTS are development of a bus rapid transit system and a network of suburban rail for a length of 200 km.

The recommendations include construction of the Outer Ring Road for a length of 62 km as a multi-modal corridor. The first phase of development for a length of 30 km is under way, sources said.

Doug and his Chennai connections

Australian medium pacer Doug Bollinger loves Chennai, which has become his second home as he stays mostly in Chennai during the Indian Premier League. Doug launched the first Advanced Hair Studio (AHS) in the city during a break from his schedule, as he is the ambassador for AHS. Actor Sathyaraj greeted the medium pacer in the lounge with a bouquet. Doug is associated with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but has more connections to the city than just being part of the team. Asked what he likes the most about Chennai, he responds instantly and animatedly that it is the place, the culture and the people.

Of course, like most visitors Doug loves the beach side resorts and never misses a chance to unwind at one of them. His favourite is Fishermen’s Cove on East Coast Road (ECR) and he describes it as one of the best places on the coast to sit by the sea. And yes, to spend time with family and friends. Doug has a liking for seafood and loves to taste everything that comes his way. I love dosas as well, he said.

Doug vouched for AHS, where he has been consulting for years. A simple thing like hair can mean so much when it gives you the confidence you need, he said.

“Playing in the IPL helps every team member grow as an individual as well and that is the massive part of the game,” he observed when asked about the impact of IPL on the Australian dressing room.

Software engineer sells furniture on pavement

Quote:

A B.E graduate K. Dasari Anand sells cane furniture on a pavement of Velachery Main Road — DC

K. Dasari Anand, 26, is waiting for a call from an IT company even as he runs a fairly successful furniture business on a busy pavement of Velachery main road.

The engineering graduate from the JNTU University in Nellore hopes he would be a software engineer in a good firm before the monsoon arrives to drench his bamboo-cane joolahs (swings) and chairs.

“I finished my IT degree in April and applied to a few software firms. Rather than sitting at home till someone called, I decided to set up this pavement shop,” Anand told DC.

He had gained experience in the business having spent his annual vacations helping his father at his wayside furniture shop in T’Nagar. His brother too had a similar business at Vizag.

“I make about five hundred rupees in a day; sometimes I am luckier. I have many educated and well-to-do clients,” smiles Anand, ignoring wife Gowri’s attempts to restrain him from ‘talking so freely to a journalist’.

“Some Tamil paper wrote about our shop and the police pounced on us the next day. We had to move to another pavement”, she explained. She helps Anand in his business even while taking care of their eight-month-old son.

But is it safe to leave his wares on the pavement during the night? “I sleep here,” replied Anand.
“Gowri and kid go home in T’Nagar in the evening. Friends sometimes offer to take care at night and I go home to rest”.
