This project cannot finish by 2013, as project has not obtained all clearance. The NLC power project also will miss the 2012 dates. I have done a compilation of all thermal plants coming up around tuticorin sometime back... will repost it and try it make some latest updates... |

Update on September 2011
1. Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) Location : Near Tuty Port Capacity : 1050 MW (5 X 210 MW) Status : Fully Operational Last expansion on 1992 Coal transported by conveyor from Port Proposed Expansion by another 1000 MW was shelved. . The proposed expansion is now revived and TNEB is now looking at a 1 X 800 MW after the new govt was formed. Too early to see an application for clearance for this project. 2. Ind Barath Location : Within 2 Kms from bypass road junction on Madurai Road, approximately 28 Kms from Port Capacity : 210 MW (some reports have 126 / 189 MW , confirmed capacity awaited) Status : Trial Runs ongoing, operational in the month of May 2010 (this month) Current Status : Operational Coal requirement will be transported by road. 3. Neyveli TamilNadu Power Ltd (NTPL) Location : Near Tuty Port, besides TTPS Capacity : 1000 MW (2 X 500 MW) Status : Construction in progress, Operational by 2012 Current Status : In my opinion this will be operational by mid 2013 Refer one of the tenders from BHEL which is the main contractor for the plant construction. The tender is for 12 months and the start of the job is Oct 2011which is very unlikely. http://www.bhelpssr.co.in/data/tende...ech%20spec.pdf Coal to be transported by conveyor from Port 4. Coastal Energen (Mutiara Thermal Power Plant) Location : 3 Kms Off ECR, approx 30 KMs from Tuty Port Capacity : 1200 MW (2 X 600 MW) Status : Construction in progress, Operational by 2012 Current Status : Not very sure on the current status. Good progress but not sure if it will be operational by 2012. Coal likely to be transported by road from Tuty Port Coal will be eventually transported by rail from the port using the Tuty-Madurai new line. The proposal for a coal jetty near their plant has not taken off Expansions plans to 3600 MW plant Public hearing for the first expansion 2 * 800 MW held in May 2011 , In general no news available in public about the project for a long time now. 5. Sterlite Captive Thermal Plant Location : On Madurai By-pass Road near Milavittan Railway Station or Sterlite Complex, Approx of 18 Kms from Tuty Port Capacity : 160 MW (2 x 80 MW) Status : Construction in progress, Operational by 2011 Current Status : I dont know the current status of this project Coal likely to be transported by road (possibility of rail also) Coal will be transported by rail, rail slidings commissioned 6. Ind Barath Location : Near Ottapidaram, Approx 25-30 Kms from Tuty Port Capacity : 450 MW (3 x 150 MW) Status : In the progress of getting clearances, operational by 2012 Current Status : Based on news this project will be operational as scheduled in 2012 Coal likely to be transported by road (possibility of rail also) 7. SPIC Electric Company Location : Near Tuty Port, Site not known Capacity : 525 MW (Not confirmed) Status : In feasibility analysis, operational by ???? Current Status : Doubtful given the fact SPIC is still in trouble Coal likely to be transported by conveyor (not confirmed) Total Capacity : 4595 MW Operational : 1050 MW Every 200 MW plant requires around 1 million ton of coal. By 2012, another 3000 MW will be operational requiring around 15 million tonnes of coal to be imported by Tuty port. Of which nearly 10 million tonnes will be transported by road. Clearly the Tuty by-pass road needs an expansion to 6-lane by 2012. Then I need to make mention about the other projects in Tuty District 1. Udangudi Power Corporation Ltd Location : Before Udangudi, 11-12 Kms from Tiruchendur in ECR to Kanniyakumari Capacity : 1600 MW (2 x 800 MW) Status : In the progress of getting clearances, operational by 2015 Current Status : Govt working on speeding up the implementation, however it is likely to be operational only by 2015 Coal likely to be transported by conveyor Govt is also looking at adding 1 more unit of 800MW, no dates as of now. 2. Ind Barath Location : Near Manapad (Approx 25-30 Kms from Tiruchendur in ECR to Kanniyakumari) Capacity : 1320 MW (2 x 660 MW) Status : In the progress of getting clearances, operational by 2015 Current Status : On course for 2015 Coal likely to be transported by conveyor There is also likelihood of another power plant proposal near Vembar (50 KMs from Tuty in ECR Road to Ramanathapuram), this is unconfirmed news but some kind of preliminary work is going on. Current Status : No further news on the same I will be updating the list whenever we get any status update on the above projects. Cheers ! Last edited by BlackPearl; October 1st, 2011 at 09:22 AM. |

![]() ![]() great updates. You made my work easier. I am preparing an excel list for the 63,000MW project under proposal, planned, construction, commissioning for TN. You have excellently compiled for Tuticorin area.. With your permission you can I use these status for my sheet? After compiling everyone, I will post it in our power thread. Many projects in Nagai and Cuddalore area looks to be mere paper project. But yet even if TN can make 25% of that 63,000MW by 2020 we will back in full swing for industrialization. Un-interrupted power and also cheap tarric is the main key for fast industrialization.

Tuticorin-Dwarka Express train from March next: DRM
Tuticorin-Dwarka express train (Vivek Express) services, which were announced in the current railway budget, will be introduced before March, 2012, A.K. Goel, Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railway, Madurai, has said here on Friday.
After getting an approval from the Railway Safety Commissioner, the bypass railway line, which is adjacent to Vanchi Maniyachi, would be thrown open to passenger trains from Tuticorin to Tirunelveli and vice versa, he replied on a query. Passage of trains along bypass track to Tirunelveli could reduce journey hours much to the likes of passengers, he said. On electrification project for cargo trains, he said that erection of poles with power lines was at the nearing stage of completion but transformer facilities at power sub-stations had to be set up alongside, subsequently. The project was likely to be commissioned after six months, he said. A team of track men had been involved in executing night patrol along railway tracks to avert any attempts of sabotage. Surveillance had been increased onboard trains to ensure safety of passengers, Mr. Goel said. Mr. Goel along with officials, including T. Venkatasubramanian, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, and S.R. Raguraman, Senior Divisional Operating Manager, were at Milavittan railway station on the inauguration of railway siding project of Sterlite Copper. Source |
